If I didn't use my Epson for more than a week, it would clog up a little and I would run 2-3 cleaning cycles before it worked. If I left it for a month, god save me... My dad has no problems with his old HP deskjet and my Canon is just fine even after 8 weeks of sitting idle.
Clogging due to air bubble trapped inside the printhead can normally be solved by doing the printhead cleaning cycle. During the cycle actually it flushes the printhead with the fresh ink from the cartridge and dump it into the the waste ink chamber, and the air bubble will normally disappear after couple of cycles. TIP: leave the printer power always ON even when not in use for a long time.
Clogging due to ink drying is normally fatal. Possible scenario: printhead was left without cartridge for long, the power was unplugged before it has parked at home, during paper jam, etc and left in that position for long, ink in cartridge is dried and totally empty for too long, hot and dry ambient, etc...
Those clogging can happen with any cartridge, OEM, 3rd party cartridge or with refill ink.
Hope the tip is useful.
