EOS 70D officially announced and previewed

Would the image quality of the 70D be better than the 7D? My bf got interested in photography as well. We are now looking out for a body for him. I currently have a efs 10-22mm, sigma 50 f1.4, and ef 70-300 IS USM used with the 650D.

Comparing the frames per sec, 70D is just 1 frame slower. Autofocus system seems to be the same and also has 19 autofocus points. The + point for 7D is the metal body and slightly bigger viewfinder coverage.

The 70D has the swivelling screen which is very useful along with the hdr function. Looking at the 7D resale price of around $1k and 70D of $1300+, the 70D looks like a better investment as the 7D is already a 4 year old technology (not that its not good).

Appreciate advise from the pros.

High ISO noise level should be better than 7D, I believe dynamic range should also be slightly better (not too sure though). Depending on the style of shooting, do you really need that extra 1fps? The fast AF in liveview will be god sent in my opinion for the 70D and its lighter weigh will be good too.

From my experience with 7D and my style of shooting... weather sealing is really not needed (but I am not sure about your bf). Also... don't think that the 70D is plastic body... it is not. It had metal alloy skeleton wrapped by a very strong industrial polymer (PC) which actually make it very strong and durable. I play with my ex-gf's 60D before and that cam can take heaps of punishment. Heck, even my old old 1000D could withstand quite a lot of rough usage, so, I don't think the 70D will fare any worst.

If I were you... I would get the 70D and forget about the 7D...

Some people seem to think that no weather-sealing = made of paper.

Canon's DSLRs (I cannot comment on other brands since I've no experience there) are built pretty sturdily, weather sealing or not. I've taken my 1000D and 500D out to the beach, bumped it into table corners, had something hit it until the glass protector shattered, used it in light rain (read it, used. Not just walk around). From 10 degrees in the UK to baking in the Singapore sun.

Guess what? They keep trudging along. Strong stuff, these plastic bodies :D

Can't agree more. Tough stuff that keeps going, rain or shine, hot or cold.... Can't always say the same for Canon lenses. But the camera bodies are well built, even their entry level DRebels...

This old video is a testament to the durability of modern camera bodies. There are quite of few of these kinds of videos on YouTube.

Hah, yeah. I remember these vids. Crazy fellas. The other one was putting it in a ziploc bag and freezing the bag in the fridge in a container of water.

Amazingly, after all the molestation thrown at these cameras, they STILL worked!

Thank you guys for the pointers. I think he will go for the 70D. He liked my 60D that was sold last time and found the 650D a tad small for his manly hands.

Will wait for the IT fair to see if Canon will throw in some additional freebies during the promotional period. Not buying from the fair though :)

Kai gives his approval of the 70D.

No worries about the durability of these DSLR bodies. Heck even my ancient plastic 300D is still intact and working since 2003. And I believe the 70D construction is much stronger and durable.

Now I am very tempted to sell my recently purchased 650D and get the 70D..... haha....

One advise... do sent out requests for quotations from reputable shops now or next week or called the shops up for quotation... so you can get a good idea of the street price of the 70D. When you go to the IT fair, you might get better deal (although not likely), but don't discount that slim probability :)

I'm surprised DigitalRev didn't try recording with facial detection, but opted for manual focus instead. No wonder Kai was moving in and out of focus...

I'm thinking of getting the 70D. Going HK tmr.

What are the prices owners have gotten it at? Surely not at RRP?

About hkd8k body alone. Based on prices on price.com.hk

How much did you pay for the Canon 70D?

I just came back from HK few days back. Checked the price on the 70D, it's the same price in SG. Totally on RRP. Guess it's a new camera I guess, that's why price is high.

The Camera Rental Centre has just announced the rental price of the Canon 70D:

$58 (first day).

Not bad to rent for a day or 2. If for longer periods, better off buying the camera and selling it off later at a discounted price that may probably be cheaper than renting.
