Ehhh, can someone share what banding is. I've never understood and quit googling.

Is it some rough gradation of colour? Like the blue near the cloulds on the left? Or am I seeing things...

hi rendetion, you're not seeing things :)
this is the larger crop or the top left corner...

it's a vertical banding :)

Can someone please explain to me this. Previously i had thought that shooting RAW would mean that i would have complete control over white balance, exposure etc etc.

But guess what?? i opened up lightroom one day and decided to try it with Jpegs and WOW, i could adjust my jpegs with the exact same settings as RAW! white balance, exposure, shadows and all could be tweaked to my liking.

Which now brings me to the point of shooting raw vs jpeg, because i have always been a staunch supporter of shooting in RAW because of the above mentioned advantages, which now don't seem like much anymore.

That coupled with the fact that Jpeg images are significantly less noisy and smaller in size, is making shooting Jpeg a better proposition.

I know that RAW is lossless blah blah blah, must convert to tiff blah blah blah, but seriously, unless you really go and pixel peeep damn closely, the differences are very little.

And clients really don't care if you've shot RAW or Jpeg, because ultimately, it's the awesome images you take, that they want.

Dear FLiNcHY

Thanks for the exploration on the lightroom on the jpeg image.
I just do some trick on some jpeg file. it true what you has mention.
But it need to understand the function from the software first.
lightroom still has some limit, which short came from photoshop.
Important the image has nicely composed and well exposured.
The client won't care, which format it capture from.
lightroom more as manage, development, output image in a package.
Sometime , it worth to try out, it won't hurt.
Open from once door may lead you to another door of opportunity.

RAW is still better if you overexpose. For non-critical photos, jpeg is ok. But RAW still provides more leeway for rectifying mistakes. I shoot sRAW1. The file size is acceptable. The real problem I face is that: either lightroom is slow or my harddisk subsystem is no good. After trying out all sorts of methods, browsing through 1K photos is still a painful process, comparing with using C1 last time.

omg i found a black spot in my 5dmkii. I guess i will be sending it for a check up..

and the sensor cleaning is also making loud noise....

Capture One 4.6 is out! I am back to the good old days where processing raw files is such a joy. Time to say byebye to Lightroom, which gave me such a horrible experience in terms of loading speed.

I noticed there is a discussion on Lightroom here. 90% of my workflow is using Lightroom. The true fact is Lightroom did slow down the processing of the images when the image quantities are getting larger. My solution to this is to save the images in a separate storage space and keep the application to a faster harddisk. If the cost is not an issue, upgrade to a faster processing CPU and increase memories. This will reduce the loading problem by lightroom. Cheers!

With exactly the same hardware, my experience is that C1 loads each image preview faster and smooth. Basically I won't feel any lag moving from one file to another. In comparison, it's like reading a network source when using Lightroom, everything becomes slow motion. Another thing, you need to generate 1:1 preview with Lightroom to speed up loading, which actually takes a long time if you have a lot of photos to start with. Imagine that if you take 800 shots and need to quickly browse through and process 80 of them for a presentation within 3~4 hours, I doubt I can make it with Lightroom. In general, I spent 50% more time inpost-processing with Lightroom and I got noisier output files, especially with high ISO settings.

Your scenerio is similar to what I encounter before I upgraded to my current system. Now with my current system, the lightroom is running smoothly with minimum lag. Of course, you have the choice to use other softwares for your convinents. :)

Upgrading is not a viable solution as I still need to use it on laptop with limited time at hand. Have you tried it on a laptop and what's the performance like? Lightroom is certainly CPU intensive as I observed.

Yes, did tried on the laptop. Indeed it is CPU intensive. Most of my time, I would prefer to use desktop for image processing. The main purpose of my laptop is to burn the unprocessed images on the spot for my clients.

Hey, anyone using 17-40L with the 5D for landscape photos? How is the image quality/vignetting/CA on a FF body? Thinking of buying that when I recover from the hole in my wallet.

You may rent a copy for the weekend, before shop on the B&S section.:)

I got the 17-40 lens but it is because it is the lightest L lens to carry around with the 5D mkii

to all who are looking for BG E6,TCW got the stock in but is grey set. I got 1 at 390 cash.

Dear 5D MKII user,

Finally firmware update release to address the black dots a
nd verticle band , that mean Sraw1 can be consider for shooting ............:)

Do read through the firmware Q&A section first before, action.
If not confirm how to do,it can drop down CSC for the firmware upgrade.

EOS 5D MarkII Firmware Update Version 1.0.7.

EOS 5D MarkII Firmware Update Version 1.0.7.

That is good news. :)

Quick question.

My friend bought the 5DmkII in Singapore. After a few days of using it, it hung i.e. power is on.. after taking a few pictures, power remained on but all buttons are non-functional.

He brought it back to the shop who replaced it for him.

Now, it is working fine BUT the "sound" of the shutter is muted compared to the very first camera.

Short of meeting up to compare how the shutter sounds, can anyone comment on this?

What is the current firmware for the 5D now (before upgrade) Isn't it already 1.0.7?

If you read through the Q&A section of the firmware version 1.0.7, you will understand more.
After firmware upgrade still have black dot or verticle band issue.
It may better drop by CSC to find out more............. :bsmilie:
