An EOS 1D is for sale at US$1650 on www.ebay.com, and the guy who is selling the camera has hundreds of good feedback.

I would like to buy the camera from US, would you guys thing that its a good ideal?

Please advice, cos the price is way too low to be true.

if it's too good to be true, it usually is. err on the side of caution my friend.

if you still wanna go for it, contact the guy and suggest using escrow services. if he's a faker, he should be warned off by this.

Could you advice me what is an Escrow service and how can I use this service?

Thank you

USD 1650 for a used 1D is certainly cheap. but be careful of customer feedback, those can be faked.

At Yahoo auctions, there is a syndicate that gives each other positive feedback, and all are selling fictitious stuff. There is this person who has more than 10 positive feedback, with similar feedback messages.

so i checked the people giving the feedback, and realised they are giving one another feedback!! it seems that either it is 1 person with multiple IDs, or a few people with multiple IDs working together.

I guess many have caught on to their act and now they are reinventing their modus operandi..

My motto: do research, buy local, but face to face

forget about the escrow, the delivery process is the problem as those things can be faked too. essentially one will be given an account to tranfer the money upon delivery of the goods, which the seller will give you a tracking number. guess what? that tracking number means nothing, as there is nothing in the box.

oh is that how it works? i'm not sure cos never used them myself. i thought the escrow service only releases the $$$ to the seller only upon receipt and satisfaction of the buyer than the product is as claimed, not just based on a tracking number. if you're not happy with it, then return it and the escrow will return your money minus the commission/fee...

at least that was how i understood it...

apparently, many folks have been duped, same modus operandi.

Some dude from bulgaria, US or any countries will tell you to send money to the Philippines, for his/her niece, who needs the money, instead of to himself. he sends you a tracking number, he will tell you that he is legit, he will tell you that he is doing this for some poor soul. then the buyer Western Union the money and it is game over...bye bye money, but no Sony DSC717, Canon G3, 1Dx, D1s..you name it, they sell it.

Used to be when they quote ridiculous prices for new items to snare folks (e.g. brand new DSC707 for SGD600) then people got smart, and now they quote "realistic" prices. Go to Yahoo Classifieds, and there is this bogus guy from Queenstown selling 10 different items at one go, from 1Ds, to CP4500.

;(

Thank you Money Gram
The seller had a high user ranking and lots of positive comments from other ebay users. I sent him several e-mails about the product and how to send it. He uses Moneygram because they are reliable and safe. Oddly I was confused to know why the name of the ebay user, the name of the e-mail address, and the name he wanted the money to be sent to, were all different names. I sent my $648 dollars to the address which was in New York City. 2 days later Moneygram contacted me and informed me that the individual was from Spain and he was scamming people off of ebay. By using Moneygram he would be able to access the money from any Moneygram location in the world.

hehe...

Lets just put it this way...

I almost got tricked into buying a Canon 1D off ebay...

and guess what... the person that almost duped me is from Malaga, Spain.

I wanted to send a bank draft to him and requested his mailing address... but he insisted that I use Western Union...

So I told him forget it.

;p

hi,

my advise is to forget it. i am a power seller on ebay with 181 feedbacks.

genuine sellers will USUALLY accept paypal and not western union or money orders. ask if you can pay by paypal.

and....yes spainish sellers are usually con pple.

be careful lar.

This actually sounds like one of those emails about sending you a few hundred millions of dollars and blah blah. I just wonder why would people donate such a high end camera to a charity organisation to sell it off. And through the internet? makes me wonder.

It seems that these people are trying to con my money.

Thanks for the advice from all of you, if not for you guys, I may have go ahead and buy the camera.

I really appreciate the infos and help

Thank you.

yea i believe it's modus operandi also but still dun understand how he cheats the money, say, by Escrow from exchange-secure.com...

exchange-secure does need you send money using Western Union or E-Gold. but it also requires buyer's approval upon receival right?

Hi,

Had similar experience. Won a bid to buy D60 plus 16-35mm L lens all for $2800. It's 2 months old as claimed from some dude in Spain. It's strange when I first started the bid, it's a guy from NZ. Then it became Spain and this guy who says he earns an honest living and needs money for Christmas. Why did he ever buy a D60 with L lens then...This combo costs around $5800.

I called Western Union. They advised that Spanish sellers - better don't try...many people lost their money. Let's face it...it's true good to be true. Even got Escrow emails....I think they are fake though....sighned off by as Escrow staff....I might as well sign off as White House Staff or staff of No 10 Downing street or Istana..

Here're the email exchanges I made:"

Hi, What about you send me half of the money first and after that I'll send you the camera. After you receive it and verify that is real you will send me the other half.

I think it is a good deal in this way. Do you have any ideeas to make this transaction sefa? Please let me know.

Thanks.

Hi Cornel,

I am sorry but I am not comfortable with paying for something without first testing it out so if overseas trading deems this as a must, then I'd have to give this a miss.

Kindly call me to see if we can work this out as I really like the camera.

Regards

Tim

Hi, merry christmas there too. I hope you have a wanderful time there too.

Yes the camera is coming with the 16-35mm 2.8L lens. I'll send it tommorow because now is close at the office. The Western Union fees are 7% for the amount that you sent. Can you send me the money in USD or EURO?

Best wishes to your wife too and good bless you with a healfi child.

Thanks.

Again, if you go to Yahoo Classified, or to Yahoo Auctions, you will see these con artists selling everything from digital video cams, digital cameras, plasma tvs (for $2000...!!? )

Personally, i think Yahoo has an obligation to check these type of listings and eliminate them, but i guess that is a tough call.

End of the day, folks just have to know one thing: If it is really a good genuine deal, the seller would have sold it locally within 1 day of listing, and would not have spent the extra time, effort and take the risk of worldwide shipment and payment.

Hello,

just found out this thread:

was very much agggrevated by the comment of 'BigBelly': that spanish sellers are suaully con people......I can also say that many people here have been conned by singaporeans! You read it so often in the newspapers!!

I am not spanish, but to generalise this way is just plain stupid!

Also, these people are out to trick people who are greedy enough to send them money for something that just sounds too good to be true!!
I have bought many things on eBay, only when there is a picture and only when the price is reasonable, and justifiable. USD1650 for an EOS 1D does not sound reasonable to me, a true seller would not sell such a camera brandnew for such a low price if he can get a better price.
I have done many deals on ebay, and send them money in cash by registered mail (so that I can track it). I did send once money through EMS courier and the seller told me that the envelope was opened when he received it and the money gone! Nothing much that I can do, should I believe his word? This was the only time I burnt my hands, no more EMS (it is done through Airborne express). Using registered mail has always been good (I use Paypal or Bidpay when the amount exceeds more than USD150, although I sent one a payment of USD 895 in four seperate envelopes to Germany but the agony waiting to see if they all arrive was too much to bear). Payments through paypal is free, Bidpay requires a fee, or do wire transfer. Western Union is way too expensive!!

So be aware and use your common sense, don't get eluded by your greed!! You may burn your wallet!

Buy only from people like me :-)

Hong Sien

thank you for your advise.

but it's hard to justify the seller by picture and price. people can still burn their hands when they send money for something WITH picture and reasonable price right?
