Hi. First, is photography allowed in this concert? In most concert, no photography is allowed. If its allowed, I suggest you get a telephoto lens since the kit lens picture quality at the tele zoom range is not very good. Regarding Question 2, I suggest you mainly use P (Program) and A (Aperture) on the D80. These are the two modes you should use most of the time, though I almost always use the latter. I don't think tripods are allowed since it obstructs movement at times and maybe you may like to use a high ISO (400 - 800). Pointless bringing an extra flash since they are unlikely to allow flash indoors.

hei.... TerryOng.... thats my REAL name too.. lol

thank you,

good ides to test out first, if not on that day shou mang jioa luan. lol.

thanks for the valuable tips.

1) Which lens should i equip so that i can take a really clear and nice picture of the singer on stage?
I will recommend AF 85mm/1.8D. Small and light.

2) which mode should i set on my D80?
Try to stay within f/2.8 to f/4. I shoot mostly manual or sometime aperature mode.

3) do i need to bring my tripod?
No no no.

4) other than all these, should i need other eqipments? (extra flash etc.)
No.

5) all other tips and comments will be very much appreciated!!! ;)
Use spot metering or centre weight and ISO 400-800. I do use ISO 1600 and -0.3EV then just watch out for strong light.

Most of my visit to indoor stadium did not allow photography but ever one time it allow. Guess what the guards allow me in but when I tried to take photo they said my gear (Minolta Dynax9 with 80-200/2.8) too pro not allowed. I asked them why they said compact can but not SLR (white Lens). And one of them even stand beside me until end of the show.

Expo was alot better. Every events I bring my D200 with 18-200VR or 300/4. Some people even flashed but no guards come.

thanks looka,

i will take note of things youu have mentioned.
another great help to mi... =P
i think i have to smuggle my slr in liao. lol. if kena caught very paiseh.... heex.

For something as big as a D80... I really really doubt you can get past the security. Even if you do, you might have to contend with the security INSIDE who would not hesitate to toss you out. Now that would ruin the whole experience of attending the concert no?

Bag checks are mandatory nowadays, along with body scans with the "magic wand". I wish you luck.

No photo-pass. Don't bother bringing your gear unless the organisers have explictly stated that they allow photography.

Imagine being turned away by security when they check and see you have camera. Are you gonna leave the concert, bring the cam home, and then come back again? Imagine that experience.

i agree.

it's quite impossible to take "quiet" shots with a dslr.

if you really want you can just get a super powerful camera handphone and try :P

buttt if you make it, be sure to share you experience!

May be you should borrow a PnS with 6x to 10x optical zoom, if PnS is allowed. 6x is only a little bigger than the 3x PnS.

if you are going to rent the 70-200 lens there is no way you can smuggle that in alr..hahah..maybe get prosumers like canon s3/s5, which is smaller thus easier to smuggle in, and at the same time have high zoom power.

PnS = Point and Shoot = compact/dummy camera
canon s3/s5 = Canon Powershot S3 IS or S5 IS
dslr = Digital single lens reflex
:)

thanks,

really clear my doubts... =)

Glad can be of help, I'm learning here as well! :)

hmm.. actually one option you can consider if you really wanna bring a dslr in is to dismount the lens from the body, then attach it when you're in. that may be.. easier.
but then again better hope for a dust-free environment in there haha

If camera is allowed, then your distance from the stage will be your consideration factor. If you are far from the stage, then obviously longer reach lens will be needed like 80-200 f/2.8 or 70-200 f2.8 VR. But these two lens will be quite heavy (more than 1kg each) and you'll probably get tired after snapping few songs.

But if you can get nearer to the stage, there are more lens you can consider like 85mm f/1.4, 105mm f/2 DC or 135mm f/2 DC. These are great lenses which are much lighter and also great for potrait shots.

Dun bother getting other lens with aperture > f/2.8, it would very hard for you to get a sharp pic. Very hard but not impossible but it'll be like 20-30% will be usable only. So,its up to you to choose. :)

If you're allowed to bring your cam in, I would suggest not getting into the trouble of renting/borrowing/buying lenses to shoot. ENJOY the concert and just shoot with whatever you have and don't be too concern about it. So just use your D80 + kit lens, good enough!

D80 noise control not too bad. My recommended settings for you (i using D80 by the way):

ISO 400 or 800 (dun go 1600...can forget it)
Manual mode, use largest aperture possible and fix it. Then adjust the shutter speed according to lighting conditions. If shutter speed too slow, example: slower than 1/60, then increase your iso to iso 800.

If lighting conditions really bad and you have to resort to iso 800 with only a shutter speed of 1/30 or even slower, shoot the singer when he's not moving...bo pian...

Hope this helps!

thanks

tkbonz.

indeed if im taking the pics, i will surely go rent lenses cos im owning the kit nia.
well.. i think using d80 kit lens to take night shots are a disaster. cos of the shutter speed. even still things can get blurred handheld.
moreover im going to a dark concert with the singer moving......

hum...
i think if i resort to having only my D80 kit lens, i will not forget wad u have noted!!!! =D
thanks alot, apreciated!!!
