Employ Singaporeans for what?

Let me smile reading that, we have known the same history in France 20 years ago. Now unemployement is officialy 10% (maybe 15 to 20% in fact and definitly more than that in country side).

Welcome in the life.com, Singapore is a very young country, it's still a very great country with many opportunities and when I see Singaporeans spending huge money in stupid cars, I still thing there is too much money here. It's true that future is not as bright as past has been. Your kids will not be as happy as you have been in your life.

Sorry, my Kids are now in Perth. They are happy. No, they are VERY VERY HAPPY!!:)

I work 70% in Minnesota and 20% in Singapore. I dont like this place. Singaporeans are paying their nose off to support many foreigngers.

Also, I dont like French in general. Very arrogant, no manners, fool around with women and talk big.

Euh, I'm French, I lived in France during 30 years and in Singapore during 4 years. I'm PR now and I know both grass better than you do. Grass in Singapore is definitly more green than in France, for me, for you and for almost everybody.

stop talking big. only 4 years in Singapore and you think you know Singapore well enough?

do you know what the life of an average Singaporean is like? you look at a Singaporean's complaint, and put it against the lifestyle of those who are better of and think Singaporeans are complaining too much. do you in the first place know where those complaints that keep surfacing from time to time come from?

While many foreigners say Singaporeans, why you complain when you can live in a nice HDB , eat S$3 meals , drive a car , have a job, dont complain.

Here is what I tell you:

HDB birdcage cost over S$300k each and now condos also S$300 (all to tie you down and the bank to slave you) , eat S$3 junk meals daily and die in your sleep , drive a El Cheapo Japanese crap car for S$80,000 and endless more bills and fines to pay, earn a miserable salary and pay everything until nothing left but a "F" Talent will earn sevreal times your pay telling you what to do while he dont know what is happening.

Many China PRC who migrated here 10 years ago, earned decent salaries now all "PUI CHOW NUA" and go back to Shanghai. They know the many racial discriminations here. Make no mistake, an average fresh graduate in China now can earn S$3k easily. There are even PRC fresh grads who are willing to work for free for the first 3 months to win the company's impression and get a job. Some managers are earning more than S$10,000 a month with many benefits. Look at Singapore, many NTU students are today still jobless, working as insurance agents or even salesmen. having a hopeless hope things will be better.

Many American and European companies CANNOT send their own people to China to manage. It is well known Europeans are damn lazy and slow, and usually would spend most of the time with the China women (you know what they do). As a result, many companies sent HongKong or Singaporean managers to Shanghai to managed the local people and also reflect the actual situation to the HQ. I have seen many of my friends moved to the new factories in China and soon all of Singapore's manufacturing will be history. Perhaps Biomedical can last a few more years, but when China plants are ready, Singapore will shut down. That is why Garment already can see that, and they build the CASINO.

Singaporeans must look beyong this miserable island. The 'management' do not have your welfare at heart. You have lived here and you know what is happening. The world is globalized now. China is a new land. Use your advantage, you are Chinese. If you are Indian, look at India. If you are Malay, you can look both at China/India and link to Indonesia.... many made hell loads of money just bridging businesses. Many have found a new and good life outside. So can you.

:bsmilie: way to go

My American friends who came here at least have more sense than the comments given by many FTs here.

My American friends say:

1. Singapore has no natural resources, and the only resource is the PEOPLE. And the 'man upstairs' certianly know how to squeeze every inch and droplet of juice out from the people.

2. Singapore is a DEMOCRATIC country?! Are you SURE and you know what is the meaning of DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY?! You need to see a Headsrinker for crying out loud!

3. I know why you guys have to pay crazy amount of money for a small car --- > DO YOU HAVE A CHOICE ??

4. Despite the Glory of Marina South and Orchird, there are many places that stinks to high heaven. I cannot believe there are so many beggars and hookers running about!!

5. I cannot believe there are so many people crampped into such a small place.... and cars are really nasty.... They drive like us, never giveway..... I cant drive here..... I am bored to death.... I am GOING HOME.

6. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE VERY ARTICULATE AND SPEAKS EXCELLENT ENGLISH WORKING AS TAXI DRIVERS ??!!

7. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY OLD FLOKS WORKING?? WHY ARE THERE SO MANY OLD GRANNIES WORKING IN MC DONALDS??

hey hey hey..... Whatever you have here, we have it in Fremont or New York. Guys, the prices are not cheap! I am going home to get the Nikon D80. Mine are definitely 100% made in Japan. What??? The ones here are made in Thai land?? You not kidding ??

HA HA Japan post war was one big Hooker Land. It still is.

But many Jap Hooker will not serve non Jap even if you pay big bucks. Those who would might be from China.

See , Japan sure know what FT to import, what FT not to import!!

Singapore still better than HongKong / Japan.... but not anymore soon.

Some tourists came to Singapore for 3 days. They saw Orchard Road, Merlion and The Durian. They went home thinking that they knew Singapore. :bsmilie:

You probably have met a local English teacher with a MA in English literature part-timing as a cab driver. :)

Yes, whenever i take a cab, they were either directors, managers , engineers . Several of them used to hold senior positions or bosses of their own in the past but got retrench. Some of them hold a master degree.

The only one who benefit better are taxi retiree who have driven more than 20 years and the kids have grown up. The current generation of taxi drivers are suffering.

My sympathies with those middle age / younger cab drivers who have financial huge commitment at hands.

How do u say " Let me pawn u !" in French ?

This shows that even a well educated Englihs teacher in Spore dun really earn much :o

sometimes its just events that allows others to exploit the situation to the fullest.

i have seen both foreign talent and also fallen talent. 1 contributes , 1 seeks contributions

we work from 6 to 5.5 to 5 days , for the same pay which working day would u choose?, its not that singaporean cannot work 6 days, its just so happen that we see people " talent" working on 5 days nia and get the same or even higher pay.

magazines like economies , talks abt minimum effort maximum returns, mgmt ply these terms in their period of operation stint in the company. when good times comes , some profit distributed , when bad times comes , u will be lucky if not retrench. But some how , their rewards do not strengthen my believe that they decision is the best 1.

i agree there are lazy people who dun make decisions, but we cannot deny that there are also people who is willing to take up the post n execute the decisions when the situation calls for it, but why somehow talent are offered the job, my view is that they network, they co mingle and develope their circle of trust, its bad that singaporeans dun trust singaporean, cause its a image thing, my company employs a talent that drives programme that sells to singaporean , hey , my company is a THE in company.

people make mistakes , important is to learn from it n make use of it, there is a lot of costly mistakes glaring at us but no 1 says anything, in a corporate world the treatment is so vastly different.

at the end of the day , i m your child that holds your blood, y do u not love me any more than that of the adopted child? is it because u prefer 2 then 1 to feed u ? give me the right tools and i too can care for u when u age, but when u dun , i will lack the will to have another child to carry on the love that u may have for me. for the care that I dun have, that which I cannot give for another generation to remember by.

in many other countries, people vote for obvious reasons ...

in Singapore, for many people i think in order to move ahead in such a 'free' job market, you must not look at yourself as a Singaporean. sad but true. of course there'll be other problems when everyone starts to think that way.

Let's look at the other way around.

As my thread originally states: why would employers want to choose Singaporeans over PRs if both perform equally well with similiar experiences and education background, and they ask for the same benefits and wages.

Would you employ a Singaporean who has a family here and:

1. Would / may have to take leave from time to time to look after family matters.
2. Serve your reservist or NS call ups which can disrupt work.
3. Sometimes unable to work OT due to family constraints, unlike FTs who are always very obliging.

The fellow commuters' comments made me reflect that I may be at a more disadvantageous position should I be compared equally in skills and critera fulfilment as the fellow FTs.

yes the problem is real, like i said http://forums.clubsnap.org/showpost.php?p=2773903&postcount=127

there are many Singaporeans who are 'stuck,' we don't know how many, but enough to see the similar complaints surface time and again. and the problem is not being solved.

With a stack of Singapore dollars in your hand, I think those women will understand even if you just say:

"Wu ai pawn lu." :bsmilie:

In the context of the discussion:

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?

Wow.. This has been a very inspiring thread. I would like to share my views after reading for an hour and pondering myself.

I feel that Singapore government is really having a problem trying to manage the balance between Singaporean and FT. Well, lets just say this, my current job is my 2nd job. In my first job(in a big home grown MNC), the group which I worked in has 10 people including my boss, I'm the only Singaporean, haha.. ratio of 10:1. And my boss is the only taiwanese, the rest are PRCs. Well, a good way to demo the ratio.

People getting EPs initially in Singapore can get to convert to PRs most of the time, well some might not for some reason but I can't be bothered to find out all of them. So if people feel that EPs and PRs are equally disadvantage and no benefits, why are there still so many people converting to PRs? Gut feeling is that they want to take the CPF lah. Correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe also to be able to buy HDB in Singapore. haha..So for PRs and EPs, if you are not happy, then why you come here???

Well, 1 thing I won't do is to give up my citizenship in Singapore, not that I love my country. But because Singapore passport is a international passport and gateway to everywhere in the world. Trust me, I'm working overseas now and I'm the few low level working guys who don't need a visa to go anywhere in the world and my shortest notice to fly is 3.5 hours. haha.. sad life. So if PRs and EPs are saying why we complain so much when we have so much benefits, just give up our citizenship and go elsewhere, well, my personal opinion is that because I want a place to fall back like all PRs and EPs, because if they not happy with Singapore, anytime they can go home, cos they still have citizenship in their homeground. So fellow Singaporeans, please do not be stupid to give up your citizenship, instead, go get a lot of PRs like our PRs and EPs in Singapore. That's the fast way out. haha

In Singapore, I learned the fact that you need to be rational, be truthful to ourselves, we are not indispensible to any company. So when there is a good prospect, go, cos if the company need to retrench people, they won't "soft hands" on you one. I believe it is not only Singaporeans who job hop. If someone want to give the FT a 25% increment, you think he won't hop?? Same as Singaporeans to the government. So next time political parties not enough people to participate in GE, get FT to participate. all OETI(Singaporeans who has been through NS will know what it means)

Education in Singapore is another thing. I used to have a diploma, then start working. Then after some time, I realise I need to get myself a "Passport", which is a degree. Cos I'm working 18hrs a day 6 1/2 days a week clearing all the **** for my engineer who take 3 times my pay. Worst still, the reason he get so high pay(according to him) because he need to spend time thinking and analysing. For you info, I tried to work in that kind of life style for 2 months and then I fell sick for 1 week. SO please do not say that there are no Singaporeans willing to work long hours. I believe it is the same case everywhere in the world, there are good people and bad people. well, let's hope that we meet more "good" FTs and PRs. Recent few years, I've also read another article about NUS and NTU increasing their student intake by 20%, my question is how come so many Singaporeans still have to go overseas to study and pay such a high school fees, well, my guess is, for the 20% increment, 15% went to foreign students so that the uni can earn higher school fees from foreigners instead of Singaporeans, so who cares whether when they come back they have to pay high loans? its Singaporean's problem, not the uni's

Last thing to complain. Haha. think mine comment is getting longer. Well, Singaporeans need to serve reservists. Sad to say, but if we don't serve, then if one day our neighbours start to think that they can push us around and start war, who will defend the country? Do you think the French, Americans, Malaysians, Indonesians, Chinese PRCs, Indians;etc, will take up the gun and defend Singapore??? I think we have to face the fact, YOU WAIT LONG LONG. They will all be queueing at Changi Airport getting their 1st class ticket back home where they have their citizenship, so left Singaporeans to defend our small dot on the map. That's why they give us citizenship and call us Singaporeans. Because even for me, I'll be coming back to defend the country, not because of my government, but because my family and friends are here, and because of my band of brothers who will also stand beside me.

I think I shared enough for today, thanks for hearing my complains and tolerating all my Singlish, haha.. Well, last thought to share, its because of our rigid education system that's why we can go everywhere in the world bridging the gap between the east and the west. Else you expect the Angmos to learn Chinese and talk to the PRCs in Chinese or the PRCs to learn English with "Idiot's guide to good english" and can speak fluent english to the angmos to communicate their idea??

if a large ratio of locals dun get married 2 hav kids later den no point trying so hard thinking of ways ard the baby prob. :embrass:

all these problems r chained-linked. like a dog chasing its own tail....

I'm a PR here. I do understand all your sentiments, and you're all right. As a citizen of your country you should have at least an advantage over foreigners even though they're helping the progress of the economy.

Just based on my observation, may be one reason why do companies here hire more foreigners than locals its because most locals tend to job hop from one company to another. I've heard a lot of cases wherein if they don't just feel the job based on their experience on their first day in work, they would just immediately resign and look for a new one. Well this is just my observation.

It's not an observation. It's actually happening. Some just can't take the truth.

Yes, I know the life of an average singaporean, I work, I live every day with Singaporeans, I arrived as expat but today, my salary is average one in Singapore. I never said Singaporean complain too much, I say there is one country where gouvernement is really helpful to the people and there is a smart social policy : Singapore.

When I was 20 to 25 years old in France, I did not eat as I should everyday, I lived in caravanne because I could not pay an appartement (rent or buy) ... today situation is worse and worse for young people in France. I manage young singaporeans in my team, they have some problems that I wish I have and I was their age.
