Ef-s 15-85

i not saying that you must get L lens to shoot good or fit your purpose. but i do see that 15-85mm is not that cheap, if you have a few more hundreds, 24-105mm L is a better value lens. most impt is that it is a constant F4 lens, if you shoot manual most of the time. this helps alot. even for beginner, i oso will recommend a L lens or a lens that fits user needs and most impt value for money. But it your decision, if you can, do try out this 2 lens and make a comparison :)

ok. i will give it a try at canon showroom.. i dun mind getting 24-105, but i afraid of my mum nagging at me and i also do need a wide angle as i do landscape shootings.

u can oso do some research on net for 24-105mm since this lens comes out quite a while already :)

fyi, i going get this lens as my next upgrade. still saving up my vitamin M :P

who minds getting a lens if they have $?

haha..

but since u need the wide side... go for the one u have in mind... the 24-105 is a great all purpose lens.. but slightly lacking wide if using crop cam... so you can rent it to try...

if not, then only rent wide lens when you wanna do landscapes, and get the 24-105 as an all purpose walkabout...

I know the 24-105 is a great lens. but i will have to top up another $800 that is alot and im only a teenager. i guess i have to get down to the showroom then make my decisions.

OH~! if that is the case then don't even think about it... save the $800... you can go holiday and shoot, instead of buy more expensive lens, then stay at home n shoot...

haha, kidding...

but seriously, save the $$... don't spend $ like water... and if you haven't start to earn money don't anyhow spend..

hey guys...

since we are in the topic of a crop sensor for canon camera,
read this review from camera labs on the 24-105 f4 L lense versus a kit lense 18-55 IS...
http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon24105mmL_with_400D_XTi/outdoor_results.shtml

the L lense has been around since 2005 while kit lense is probably in its 4th generations or more now (I think)

my advise is still to get the 15-85mm... which is the equivalent 24-136mm for the APSC equivalant
so it will mimic the FULL FRAME 24-105mm lense and a portrait lense of 135mm...
learn the proper way of photography and not buying one cos its a 'L' lense for a start!

as for low light situation, get a cheap 50mm f1.8 for $120+ (new) that will again mimic a 85mm f1.8 for a full frame

when start working and saved enough, can then go for the pro stuffs with a FULL FRAME sensor and 'L' lense!!

my 2 cents....

i have that exact same setup. IQ is good, hunts well in lowlight if you know how to do it.

only grit i have with it is, big and heavy. doesn't balance well with my 500D during use and my wrist sore after long use. thus desire for bigger grip or body for comfort. basically ergronomics wise, not really suitable for rebel series. well, these are what I experience anyways, may differ for you. try it in a shop first.

otherwise, i'm happy with my combo

for your delima with the 24-105, a few month back i was 'poisoned' by that lens and even thought of selling the 15-85 and getting the 24-105..until i tried it at the shop. the zoom ring is at the back of the lens and it just doesn't feel right. maybe i've gotten used to the zoom ring on the 15-85 but yea, that alone killed my urge for the 24-105. although i still find that constant f/4 mighty sweet. also, my personal preference, just sharing experience. in the end still up to you, search around your archive to check what focal lengths do you use the most, can help you decide better. or just rent both lenses and try for a week.

good luck man

Thanks for your advice. I don't actually plan to get a L lens cos it always cost a bomb! I alrdy tested 15-85 at canon showroom and i was good! i also do need a wide angle lens.

Haha, glad to see that u have made your choice, hope that you will have fun shooting with your new lens choice :) When i tried out the 24-105, i really didnt like the zoom ring which was small and it is behind the focus ring. And the weight is also really .. heavy for a travel walk about lens

Haha, ok thanks alot for the advice. Yea. I find it better to have a wider grip for zoom ring. :D:D

okie, don't discuss le, close thread... take wallet... go buy~!

Haha the 24-105 lens is a great lens too... Having owned it myself, I can safely say it's IQ won't lose to 15-85 (but I don't know about winning it haha). It's a pity you're limited by budget.
But if you do get a large amount of cash boost, still do consider it haha. Weight isn't a problem, I can vouch for that. It's a great general purpose lens, but maybe not as wide as you may like on a 1.6x crop. Also, the zoom ring isn't a problem (or for me at least). I don't really understand why people don't like a zoom ring behind a focus ring, but I use this lens very often and it doesn't bother me. Don't see weight and zoom ring as problems on this lens. Maybe the wide angle might be a problem though.

unfortunately for the rest of us, we are not as fortunate you to be able to purchase multiple L lenses, thus the 15-85 is good enough in terms of IQ, AF and it is also cheaper :bsmilie:

The zoom ring is quite small compared to lenses such as the 15-85 and 18-55 where the zoom ring is huge. This can make a difference if u r upgrading from the 18-55 to the 24-105 and u find that u cant grip the ring as comfortably as before.

If you are just walking around singapore, weight isnt much of a problem. If u go overseas travelling, u r probably want to travel as light as possible without sacrificing the ability to take nice pictures and thus carrying heavy L lenses isnt very suitable, unless u are on a photography holiday, that is..

I have both EFS 15-85mm and EF 24-105mm L.

Sharpness wise, both produce very sharp images. Color and contrast wise, I will say L lens is better. Both lenses' build are very solid. L lens has weather resistant, slightly heavier but feel firmer during trigerring. Also, 24-105mm giving you constant f4 which is very useful feature and that's the definate reason I keep it and disposing the 15-85mm.

15mm is pretty wide angle but I already have a very sharp Tokina 11-16mm Pro for landscape shooting thus, for other ocasions like portait and outdoor activities shooting the 24mm has enough especially if you are using a full frame body.

Overall, you won't regret to have either one of them. But, EFS15-85mm cannot be used in full frame body.;)
