i'm considering this lens as well, the AF motor problem reported by some users really hold me back though.
anymore feedback regarding this issue?

hey bro! long time no see :) . . . same here, considering this lens too . . . and have been held back by that AF motor issue . . . 50mm on a 1.6x body is kinda tight too . . . so i'm thinking of getting the sigma 30mm f1.4 instead

sorry to hijack this thread, but if anyone is interested in buying the canon f1.4 lens can PM me so we can get a better bargain.

vincentong, if u want me to remove this post, pls PM me. thanks. ;)

dig out this thread, how the comparison between canon 50mm f1.4 USM to Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG HSM?

i dun see much pic on canon 50mm f1.4.

With regards to auto-focus speed of 50 mm f1/.4...

It depends on the generation of the camera you are using.

As I am on a 5D1, 50 mm f1.8 actually focuses and locks faster that 50 mm f1.4. This is probably due to the algorithms between micro-motor vs micro-usm.

On a 50D, this is entirely opposite. Try it if you don't believe me... :bsmilie:

Sometimes is the focusing system, the XXD series tends to have a better focusing system then the classic 5D or even the mk ii.

While the f/1.8 variant faster than the f/1.4 USM. a bit weird tho. Haha

Focusing speed and accuracy is also relative to body it's mounted to as well. It's certainly noticeably slower on 5D than on xxD bodies (at least for my previous 40D) especially on low-lit conditions but this lens is one awesome piece of add-on. Colours, contrast, sharpness, bokeh... it's crazy.

yeah.. the sigma 30mm 1.4 is good too.. give you a wider angle... great bokeh as well :)

i think the sigma one is better if u can get a good copy..pictures i seen from it is stunning..compare to the canon..that's my view though...others may prefer to keep canon

Do note that Sigma's 30 1.4 is a DC lens designed for cropped DSLRs (i.e EF-S) while the 50 is a DG (EF).

BTW, while we are here. is there supposed to be a rumored 50mm 1.4 MK2 coming soon? any ideas when?

i oso see the rumour... i shall wait for the new len to come out

i thinking if the len will be on par or better than Sigma 50mm :D

CAN BUY YOUR EF 50mm 1.8 @ $60 IF YOU DON'T WANT ALREADY? 90844871 if only you're not interested with your lens already. tnx!

Firstly, please post your WTB queries in relevant subforums. This is not the appropriate place to post them.

Secondly, please have some sense of internet etiquette. Please refrain from typing in all caps; it gives the impression that you are yelling. You wouldn't walk into a camera store in real life and yell "CAN I BUY YOUR LENS..." would you? Likewise, don't do it on a forum too.

bro, it's lens (singular) and lenses (plural).

I was gonna go get the 50mm f1/4 this month and now there're rumours of a markII coming out? Damn.

I hope the rumours of a new release actually coming to fruition though; either to see an improvement in the lens or a drop in the price for the markI.

I didn't believe my eyes at first, got to try it to believe it.

I like the Sigma better in terms of IQ and bokeh.Only problem is that lens peels very easily and you have to buy the more ex 77mm filters.

I own Canon 1.4, but I'm planning to trade it for Sigma. Haven't done that coz I don't use 50mm alot nowadays (enjoying MF on 90mm tse too much)
Sigma
Adv: Much better sharpness for larger apperture f/1.4 - f/2, nice bokeh less distracting than Canon (but bokeh is always matter of taste)
Dis: Bigger, more expensive, less accurate AF, less sharp in the corner for full frame

Canon:
Adv: More accurate AF, smaller, sharper in the corner on smaller appertures
Dis: hazy on f/1.4 - f/2

Both lenses have adv and disadv, so none is better than the other

If you use 50mm for studio shots, using F/8-F/11, the canon would be a better choice
If you use it for landscape, canon wins again
If you use it for portrait using f/1.4 - f/2.8, sigma wins
etc.

for those cannot focus in low light with the 50mm 1.8 canon, it cab easily due to the flat contrast so the camera just cant find a way to 'see' ...

i take photo of my kids with only 1 side table lamp on .. i will use his eyes, nose or month as focus point.. no problem at all. sometimes can be hunting for focus but once it does that i quickly move another point to try focusing again.. no point trying the same spot and it takes 10sec or so to focus.. if it cannot focus with that points means probably its not gonna happen soon.
