Well in the first place you were asking about comparison between f2.8 zooms mar.

:embrass: that's why I added the 'wat else would u suggest' at the end mah...

so now I shall officially leave it open ended...

I should need mainly fast focusing, sharp & passable in low light... so I guess that's what I'm looking for... ;)

from all your advice/suggestions/views etc so far & after reading some reviews, i'm falling for the 24-70 L...

maybe I should put up a WTB for it.. ;p so anyone reading this... any offers? :bsmilie:

users of the various mid zooms, wat  do u have 2 say abt ur lens? esp in respect to wat I'm looking for?

I love reading everyone's view... learning so much... :embrass:

As you've probably gathered, I'm rather pleased with myself for settling on the 24-70 despite the few hundred extra grams over the 24-105. Should be reasonably well balanced with your 30D. A battery grip will move the centre of gravity even further toward you which may further improve the balance (adds further to the weight though) but you may find it's not necessary.

If you decide to go new, recommend you pm The Oracle (check the MO forum) - he gave me a good price on a new warrantied set and can order in items like the grip & other lenses if you can hold on for a week or two.

Tried to post some pics as an illustration but failed miserably - sorry about that. Will read the FAQ some more...

Got it !!!

Benjymocha - I don't want to take over your thread but given you're giving serious consideration to spending a horrendous amount of cash thought I'd throw a couple on here. I make no apologies for the composition etc, just wanted to illustrate the level of sharpness and colour that I got with zero effort and little post processing - conversion from RAW (with Canon software) and resizing (with Canon software). No USM applied, no colour fiddles. PM me if you are interested in other samples - happy to oblige.

All with 350D, 24-70L and battery grip for balance
Not great lighting (taken this morning) but illustrates a point

100% Centre crop
If you look carefully you should be able to see a table lamp reflected in her eye with the bulb switched on in the middle. Didn't spot this till I cropped. (She was playing the game we like to call on...off...on...off...on...off which is in no way annoying at all :mad2: )

more!!! more!!! I wan to find out more!!! haha...

thanks everyone! Keep them coming! ;)

hey everyone!

thanks for all your advice!

I went for the 24-70 (thanks to The Oracle that I managed to get it in time for my trip! got it less than 24 hrs before I flew off. :bsmilie: )

I've just returned and so far, i've nothing to complain about it! (maybe except for the hole in my pocket.) Made all the difference during the event.

all in all, worth the $$!!! I Like!!! :D

once again, thanks everyone!!!

For those who want top IQ from a short range zoom, the 24-70 is the one.

For those who like to show off, the 24-70 is also the one.

The 24-70 makes all the other lenses look like toys, even the 24-105, 16-35, 17-40 etc. Dont try it if you do not want to spend!

24-105 > limitation of f4
16-35 > flare and poorer sharpness
17-40 > limitation of f4 but affordable

Tamron 28 - 75 > so sharp but AF way too slow (still life is ok but taking events is no-no)

true... think I was inadvertantly turning heads with it!

even The Oracle was shocked that I was the one buying it! :bsmilie:

  lens!

but hey guys, remember that it's what u need that counts, not just cause it's the best or the most ex!

that's actually one of my major concerns... cos the shots are going to be fast & furious..:bsmilie:

dun really know how to explain but i guess closest example i can give is like prize giving ceremonies but higher turnover???

so focusing in that kind of situation? how?:dunno:
Is that an issue? Is it more of a photographer problem or lens problem?
I use my Sigma 18-50 F2.8 lens for various events, prize presentations, I've never missed a shot so far. Events that I've shot with that lens: Clubbing events, prize presentations, stunt competitions, bar-tending/flaring competitions, etc etc.. Mind you, I'm not shooting for fun, but for work (various publications and media).

And no, the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 does NOT have USM or HSM.
