EF 17-40 with 5D Mark II or 7D For Travel

Depends on your need.... 17-40mm on 5DmkII becomes an UWA... on 7D its a normal walkabout lens.

But if you have 24-105mm.... shouldn't you be bringing 5DmkII + 24-105mm ??

Thank you all for your advice.

I am not that good with the S90 as i bought it for my wife.

Even i have a EF 24-70 2.8 i find this lens is too big and heavy, but both body is about the same weight.

Thinking of bringing the 50mm 1.8 since it so cheap and light. What do you think?

For those who had been to Hokkaido what did you bring?

I went to Hokkaido with the kit lens! :bsmilie: I rarely used beyond 40mm (55*1.6=56), I just wished I had a wider lens. If I were you, I will bring the 17-40L with a 5D2. 50mm is kind of useless IMO.

Well, I brought my 5DM2 to Tokyo as well earlier this year, with my 2 kids (6 yo and 4yo). You really have to ask yourself what is more important: taking photos or spending precious time with the kids. I know both are important, the question is which one has a higher priority.

Bring a decent prosumer instead, G11, LX3, M9, whatever, someone light is best.

And don't bother to bring a tripod either.

for me will be this set:

5D MK1 | EF 20-35mm | EF 50mm that all...

How big is your family? If more than 6, 17-40. Else someone will always be left out of the photo :)

I would think a fast lens is a must for those times when you want to take a nice thin DoF portrait of any family members.

You would need a tripod and remote trigger if you want to be in the family group shots.

Just came back from Hokkaido on a 10 days F&E family trip. I brought a 7D with 10-22, 24-70L and 70-200F4L together with a 580II. Not forgetting a tripod too. :)

Hi TS, i am going Hokkaido tml night on group tour with my family.

I am bringing most of my gear seens traveling wouldn't be a problem as tour bus will bring me around.

I will sugguest to bring 7D with 17-40 for landscape and portrait.

If possible 24-105L with 5D mk2 for maximum versatility and convienience. 17-40 with 5D/mk2 is gd. Only if you are going zoo or birdpark then you'll need tele like 70-200 go for the F4 version its lighter.

LX3 or EX1 with a light weight tripod like slik sprint pro:heart::heart:

Going to Hokkaido/Tokyo with family( baby and 6 year old) June

Wonder which body should i bring?

I've done Tokyo/Osaka with 5dMk2 and 24-70 with tripod and 430EX. Ancillary equipment included a notebook and external hard drive AND a 2.5 yr old boy. It is possible and as long as you take care of the family first you'll enjoy the trip. If you yourself feels bogged down with the camera equipment then don't take it or take the minimal amount even if it is just a prime lens like a 50mm. Having the camera with a fixed focal length prime is good practice. Afterall, back in the days of shooting film it was usually just a single 50mm prime stuck on the SLR body.

I suggest toting a P&S like the S90 for the wife as this makes her feel involved in the capturing of those precious moments of you and the kids.

The tough part was moving around for me as the cases, gear and kid needed to move from place to place. We did free and easy and took up hotel stays in various parts. Transport by train is the only way (die from $hock with the taxi fare) but it is usually a walk and a half to get to the station. Try doing that with two suitcases a kid and your camera gear. Often times there were no escalators or lifts or they are further away.

I think the range of 24-70 is good on full frame and the 17-40 on the 7D may do just as well being slightly less wide and a bit short on range but you lose quite a bit of weight. If you've got the 24-105 I'd stick that on the 5dMk2 over the 24-70. F-stop isn't a big deal, just push the ISO. What the 7D offers up over the 5D is the built-in flash for those instances you need a small fill and you save having to carry the extra flash attachment.

Whatever you do, don't bring two bodies and unless you see an opportunity to take pics you can sell to make some dough, don't bring multiple lenses.

There's my two cents contribution.

definitely 17-40 and ff camera.. i brought only a 17-40 and my 5d classic travel around china...

if for me ....it will be 5Dmk2 with 17-40

Bring Iphone! Lols jk i would take 5d with 17-40, 21mp with sharp detail is good for cropping and FF wide + 1740 good for wide spaces too =P

Yeah had a feel of the iPhone 4 at Yodabashi Bic Camera when they are launch, the screen and processor is fast, camera is only so so.

Anyway just came back, and finally bring along only 17-40mm with 5D mark II, 2 batteries hanging on my shoulder every day with a photo to share

I find the video better to capture certain moments.
