Any other brand to recommend? Canon's teleconverter are abit pricy.

You can try kenko but they don't feel very sturdy especially if you intend to use it with a heavy lens like a 70-200 2.8

I use a 1.4x with my 500mm f4 lens and I find the results very acceptable. Most birders and animal shooters I know use a 1.4x with their 600mm lenses. But of course, most will use a 1D series body or at the very least a 40D body. So if you got subjects that need the range, then by all means, use a 1.4X with your 70 - 200 mm f2.8 lens.

The thing is....Canon's 1.4x only for at least f/4 lenses and 2x for at least f/2.8 is u want to AF with the converters.

so getting a 1.4x to use with the ef-s 55-250 (bought budget to practise telezoom) is not a good idea? body 40D.

It can't even be done. You can't mount a 1.4x extended on the EF-S 55-250 lens.

Agree with calebk as the Canon's extenders both have a protrusion at one end which will accomodate only it's tele series such as 70-200 and above.

I'm using a 40D, would the canon TCs work with my Sigma 70-200 2.8 ?

I doubt so. Sigma has their own TCs.

Actually I think it might work if the Sigma lens also has a recess at the back so that you don't damage it when you mount the TC. My Canon 2x TC works with every lens I have once I found a way to mount it. How? Extension tubes. I first discovered that it'll work when I tried using it with extension tubes on a 100mm macro to get more than 1:1. AF, control of aperture works as per normal. Only difference is that if I use it with my 200mm 2.8 (a supported lens) the exif will say that my focal length is 400mm and the max aperture I can select in camera is f5.6, with other not supported lens exif and aperture will be as if you had no TC attachted.

It'll work with any lens if all have a recess at the back. If i'm not wrong if added extension tubes, u can't focus infinity as it's meant for close-ups. And yes u're right. If u add a 2X TC on a f/2.8 lens, u can only use f/5.6 as the minimum and on a 1.4X with a f/4 lens.

Please help me with this info on a camera body 40D.

a) 70-200 f4 with IS & AF + (1.4x) becomes 98-280mm f5.6 - IS works & AF don't work?

b) 70-200 f4 with IS & AF + (2x) becomes 140-400mm - IS works & AF don't work? But f4 is now what?

c) 70-200 f2.8 with IS & AF + (1.4x) becomes 98-280mm - IS & AF still works, I think. But f2.8 is now what?

d) 70-200 f2.8 with IS & AF + (2x) becomes 140-400mm - IS & AF still works, I think. But f2.8 is now 5.6?

Thanks guys.

for the 40D, or any Canon dSLR except the 1D/1Ds series for that matter, AF only works properly with max aperture of 5.6 and below..

with the 2x convertor you lose 2 stops, so go figure..

Stick with the 1.4x if possible. The 2x (from lots of pics out there) seem to take away too much sharpness and contrast. The 70-200mm pics seem to look like 75-300 pictures when you slap on the 2x TC.

yup, stick to a 1.4X TC. 2X is too much a compromise in image quality. my 70-200 F/4 IS doesnt suffer any loss in IQ with a 1.4X TC slapped on and thats probably becos its very tack sharp to begin with.

For the f/4 one, AF only works with the 1.4X one. f/2.8 AFs with both types.

Of course, on a triple digit / double digit (400D / 40D) camera, adding a 2x TC to a 70-200mm mounted on a 1.6crop body means.. 2 x 1.6 x 200mm = 640mm, which is great for birding (if you ever get interested) but that is only if the image quality is still good.

Or if you're a budget tele shooter with a 1.6x crop body.. ~450mm for about 1/3 the price (70-200mm f/2.8IS + 1.4x vs 400mm f/4 DO IS) Really good deal if you look at the big picture.

Something wrong with the understanding here, either u or me.

As i understand, 1.6-crop never means you have 2x1.6x200mm focal length. Because crop-body never changes the focal length, so what you have is 2x200mm focal length only, but have the angle of view of 2x1.6x200mm lens (which is not good).

Therefore, who still thinks that crop body helps the bird photography, think again. Crop body doesn't give u such advantage over FF (i don't see any other advantage actually).

I see the same thing in the topic of "Set up and settings for upcoming F1" when someone thinks that Olym 2x-crop is helpful. No it isn't.

In summary, just the angle of view may change on different format, never the focal length does.
