E520 Review...

The 520 sounds louder than the E3. At least to my unreliable ears.

there is few other benefit of using liveview... like adjusting WB.. at least it is useful for me. full view of the picture (from my knowing viewfinder only provide about 95%) which is important. other than above 2, it help to have 10X zoom... at least u can see what u cant see with your eye...

Tentatively agree with the WB advantage. With DSLR, I can take a test shot first and review the WB, if it's off, adjust and test again. I guess with Liveview, it's a short cut in this process. However, for Oly DSLR, WB is mostly spot on, except for artificial lighting.

I agree with the x10 magnification. I've poor eyesight, so manual focus for me is not too reliable. Can't trust my own eyes. The auto focus can't be relied on all the time, sometimes it is out of focus for difficult scenes. The x10 mag would help. Haven't tried it in real life, so can't confirm.

can anyone please tell where to get the best deal for a new 520? how much does it cost? after all the reading i am really keen to get one. thanks!

The best deals would not be in Singapore since the E520 is not released here yet. ;)

at the moment is get it from benard in B&S forums. Some online store already start selling like dealuseek which can be found in CS mass order.

A question, how many of your shots are shot at eye level?

The problem with optical view finder is that the camera has to be at eye level. Sure you can squat, lie, jump, climb ladder, etc, I find using a good lve view implementation much better.

would like to understand the advantages of having LiveView in DSLRs. I think for Point and Shoot it's ok since the viewfinders there are really too small for any practical purposes, now a lot of P&P don't even have view finders.

For DSLR, view finders are large enough (compared to P&P) anyway. Sure Olympus has one of the smallest viewfinders amongst the DSLR, but still good enough for me.

With LiveView, the image is jerky when you're just panning th camera around. The image is washed out in bright sunlight, the focusing is slow and holding the camera at arm's length to view the LCD while composing shots, is just so unnatural and very tiring especially for long telephoto lenses. When the light levels goes down, it is completely dark vs the viewfinder where I can still see something.

So with all the above negatives, why are manufacturer's going with LiveView in droves (Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony etc..) ? If I want a entry level camera without Liveview, it is difficult to find one nowadays (new models anyways). I have to pay for something I don't really need and is inferior to the Viewfinder.
Sure you can preview exposure first before you capture with Liveview, but with digital SLRs, just take a test shot first would not be too much of a problem.

Guys,

all my shots are at eye level, but that is besides the point. I find that if the LCD is fixed, not articulated, then shots still have to be shot at eye level for straight on view. Overhead shots, ground shots will not be at it's best without an articulated LCD. I had a Canon G1 and that was very good with non eye level shots, because I can turn the lcd every way I want.

If the function of the LiveView is to address non eye level shots, then an articulated LCD is a must. One without the other is a crippled implementation. Yes, the Olympus LCD does have a wide angle of view, but wouldn't you prefer to view the LCD straight on, if you had a choice ?

You have a choice if you want tiltable LCD like Canon G1. Go buy E-3 :D

no one is selling it in Singapore yet, as far as I know. Would love to get my hands on one too. Tell you what, stop reading this forum, and your urge to get the E520 will go away.;)
I saved a lot of money that way.

well, we are talking about different price category here of course, ie. E3 vs E420. Not really much of a choice if you are on a budget. The point was why design a Liveview with non articulated LCD ? can't they make it articulated at a price point ? (not at E3 price point though). On that note, I don't really see people take non eye level shots with their point and shoot cameras. In my opinion, it's just not feasible having to squint at the LCD at an angle. Not the best way to compose shots.

The function of a live view not only address to non eye level shots. Using it while doing marco with the ability of zooming in 7X to 10X is good for precise focusing.
