What would you say about steady hands at 1/50th with a 500mm lens? :bsmilie:

When I bought my 500mm f/8 mirror lens I tried it out in the store, and even at ISO1600 I could only get 1/50th...unprocessed 100% crop:

Considering the noise, focal length, and long exposure it's not that bad.

I can do a 1/20 at 200mm. ;)

not really. I owned a nikon 70-300 VR2 and I find that it has HUGE benefits IF your hands is steady.

If I shoot at 300mm handheld, the best I can do is around 1/80 consistently.

There are many tests now showing before and after pictures with IS and no-IS. Go check them out. Helpful for people without steady hands. IS has not been helpful for me as marketing people would like to claim. My colleagues tell me I have "IS Hands" and other tests also confirm that IS does degrade the quality a little. Same scene, same camera, but huge difference in camera shake.

My preference is to have IS (E-510) as I don't really care about minute differences in quality but it will be useful for folks who borrow the cam but do not have steady hands. Also, a tripod for me is very important--managed to get an AS Z1 QR mated to a Gitzo and Kirk base plates with RRS plates (including their rails). Costs much more than an E-510 for sure. Worth it? Of course, more than what IS can produce.

I don't think the 2-lens kit for the E-410 is stocked yet.

If you want it you may need to wait a month or so; expect the price of the two-lens kit to be about 200 bucks more.

I just bought the E500 | 14-45mm | 40-150mm

Good choice! Although E510 is coming out. :D For that price, it is worth it. You can wait, but the pictures can't.
