Finally bought a white PL1.

NEX 5 is good too but much more expensive than the PEN, thus, my decision.

congrats. i also just got my E-P1 last week :)

the NEX 5 is onsale at PC Show for 1199... add 99 for extra lens. so 1298 for dual lenses aint that bad. but to be honest I still prefer m4/3 hehe

Is it true that you can't set Apperture manually in NEX3/5?
That you have to use "Background Defocus" setting?

I was gonna wait for NEX instead of getting epl-1, but there's no M-mount adapter as yet, and no in-body IS too.
I'm very happy with my EPL-1. Plus the combo with VC 50 1.1 + inbody IS is awesome.

I'm not too bothered with the dof differences between 2x and 1.5x sensor. I do feel the difference between 1.5x and FF.

I think I will only upgrade if there's a new FF interchangeable lens camera available (with electronic VF/Live View, not RF like M9)

Aperture can be set manually, the NEXs have P/A/S/M modes just like the PEN.

erm, OT a bit. Where do u guys get the filter for the kit lens and how much?

Thanks!

Hi

I like the image quality of the PL1 and most of all, what the art filters can do.

But just when I decided to buy the PL1, Sony announced the Nex. I’m having a hard time deciding which to buy.

The Nex looks good too as it is even smaller, nice LCD and has a APS- C size sensor. I know each has its own merits but I can only buy 1. So I start this thread to gather more insights from you all.

Which one would you choose and why?

Thanks!

There is no brand loyalty here, so I shall make it an objective comment.

If the purchase is for NOW, then its a no brainer for me to take the PL1. Why, because I never believe in "recently released product" that contains microprocessors and firmware that has yet to be tried and tested.

In terms of image quality, I believe both cameras are pretty much on par, but there will always be a nagging thought behind you if you were to get the PL1 and not the Sony. Unless you have good Zuiko lenses and MMF adapters, else it would be no harm to invest into another system to satisfy your gear "wants".

That said, only you yourself can answer to the question : Buying because of a need or a want? Sony is the new gadget, and if you take a lot more satisfaction of owning a new gadget, then it might be better money spent, on getting the Sony. You can always sell it and get a PL1 should it fail to live up to your expectations.

Speaking for myself, I have "switched" recently and will be enjoying the new gadget for a moment until a few months later when the "fever" subside, and then decide will I go back to Olympus DSLR or stick with the new platform.

So you see, please yourself and in this case, yield to your "gear lusts". It can end up inspiring you to shoot more and capture better images. Photography is photography, the equipment you use are merely tools. If the new gadgets inspire you creatively (like Pen did a lot for me), then please, do yourself the favor and get the Sony.

Happy shopping.

Ur switch is it from 43 to m43? That one no count la, so similar...:bsmilie:

I was all ready to get the NEX5 cos i can get it for a very very good price thru a fren but i learned that i can't AF with the CZ 16-80mm mounted on it via adaptor ( much like the 14-54 on m43 body does), that's the bummer for me. No IB-IS is not that a big deal breaker for me

I still like the size & the tiltable hi-rez LCD though

Qn to the backside: To itch or not to itch? :bsmilie:

Would not mention "go back to Olympus" if it was m43 would I? Something far more sweeter, and erm... better not say it here. Just a lot bigger in sensor size. Somewhat 645-ish. Yes, I did it. This is not the medium format equipment section so we will not discuss medium format cameras in here.

To answer your question : If you have an itch, scratch it. Or you can never really sleep well.
