[ E-P1 Diary ] - 10 Things I hate about the E-P1

i got mine yesterday, a white one with the 17/2.8 pancake. the thing that gets me most is how sensitive the push-buttons are on the main rear dial; i keep pressing them accidentally while scrolling, and it messes up my settings. :(

blacking out the LCD can only be done by dedicating one of the custom buttons to that feature. why no dedicated LCD button? :(

ergonomics: i am finding it hard to hold the Pen one-handed comfortably, and i have relatively big hands.

i would love to be able to customize more functions for quick access - the Ricoh GX-100's customizable ADJ menu is nicer in that regard.

otherwise.. am loving it!

walaueh...made in China????
thats what i hated it...

n the triangle clip on the side of the body..removing it scratches the metal ring. dam it! remove to use a hand strap. never like over the neck strap.

i like the camera, becos of its design. interchangeable lens system on a smaller body. good pictures n colors for my personal liking.

I am intending to get a matin hand strap also, but is it a little out of place? That is I think the bottom base plate may be wider than the camera base.

i was using this for my leica.

took it out and put it on the ep1. works great. just that instead of slotting my third n forth finger in, i just slot my index finger into the top loop. very secure and i just let it my cam hang loose and swing it around. should be a prob cause i swing my leica around in it, and the leica is a much heavier cam.

also i attach the domke gripper strap. love the strap.

I was looking for the finger strap for my rangefinder, though where can I get it locally?

not sure locally where can get. i got mine from that site. but i figure, you can try going army market to get the strap and DIY... though i don't know the QC of that strap is how good n durable.
i'm waiting to go back reservist, and if kena heli transport sessions, can take some of their straps, those for sure i know can take loads up to 1,000+kg loads..

Seems expensive for such a small piece of web tubing.
Anyway, here are more types of straps constructed from web tubings... around the same price ... but longer web tubings (better value for money? :))

Y-Strap:

I have the Y-Strap... works well for small cameras like the E-P1.

yeah. it's pretty ex. but i like the finger better.. round the wrist n neck don't do it for me. cause it's either in my hand ready to shot, if no use for it, it'll be in my bag..
hehe plus previously when shooting for a friend's ROM, leica was attached to my finger, swung to the side, when shooting with a FE2..

Just got my E-P1 on sat and tested it for a few hours. I don't have 10 things I hate, jus 2:

- No. 1 hate wld be the low res LCD for me. Coming from LX3, the crystal clear LCD allows me to accurately compose my pictures in terms of color, focus and exposure. With E-P1's LCD, I'm almost shooting blind. I think it's gonna be even harder to compose with a macro lens when u need precise focusing.

- LCD lags badly in Art mode. That means it's very very difficult to shoot moving objects in Art mode. Olympus should just do away with live preview of the Art filter and perhaps have preview on shutter press instead.

I wonder if the LX3 screen is just high res enough or do you need any higher resolution?

I can appreciate trying to focus without the MF zoom to be an issue. How are colour and exposure affected by screen resolution?

Or leave it to choice. I like the art filtered mode as it is. If you are shooting moving objects, post-processing for art effect may be a better choice. On the other hand, trying to catch the moment using live-view is quite a chore, not that DSLR will fare much better here. A bit of prediction helps ;).

If the lag in Art Filter mode really bothers you, then shoot in "regular mode" and edit/add Art Filter later on in Master software.

for me the one main problem is that i have dirty hands from whiteboard markers during teaching... and my white e-p1 always need a cleaning with zippo at the end of the day =(

go buy zippo shares now, I think as more e-p1 users ard we will buy more zippo and inevitably the share prices will rise

@LIGHTSABRE: Identical findings as you have with the EP-1... My 3-part review shows the AF sluggishness and other issues you've pointed out. http://reviews.davidleetong.com/?p=1189 but the images are lovely to say the least.

Hmmm... looks like that is the way to go... buy buy buy... Zippo shares.

Probably the color and brightness of the LCD is also more accurate I don't know as I did not do an indepth comparison. I did pop my E-P1's SDCard into LX3 to preview the images and found that it looks quite diff on LX3's LCD in terms of color, brightness & details. You can see if an image's focus is wrong w/o having to zoom in. On LX3, WYSIWYG, you don't have to guess how the image will utimately turn out to be... since E-P1 comes w/o a EVF, I think the LCD's image quality should at least be as good as LX3's. With a high res LCD, we may not even need MF zoom most of the time.

Good thing is, most of the time the images turn out to be superb even though it doesn't look as pleasing on the LCD. The E-P1 would have been perfect if they wld include a quality LCD.

jus a question. once i set the art filter mode can I change the filter without having to move the dial again? i can seem to change from 1 to the other
