Dual purpose Lens help: macro vs tele vs portraitd

Even if you got a soft focus copy, you will still be able to do micro af adjust to get the optimal result. (7D or 5D n Pro-series body)

Curious, I thought Carls Zeiss 50mm F2 ZE for Canon is a manual focus lens and micro-AF works only works with Auto Focus lenses only.

Canon 100mm L f2.8 macro is a fine lens. It is very good for baby photography, if you have the space to move around, as 100mm with 1.6x crop body gives you an effective FoV of 160mm, which can be rather narrow.

Landscape-wise, I do use the 100mm too, no issues about that. However for street photography, do note that the 100mm focusing is not that fast.

Usually macro lenses focusing speed are slower than regular due to its macro feature and having too fast an AF would increase the chances of OOF for your macro subject.

actually the non-L falls into that normal characteristic of almost all macro lenses have slow AF, thats one feature i missed about it and it has its purpose...

while the L version has lightning speed AF which is quite a downside when doing handheld macro...

will you guys consider buying a 100mm 2.8L lens no warranty but with 1 speck of dust inside for 1050? mint condition, comes with everything plus uv filter? bnew now cost about 1250+

U're right. But a macro lens of any kind demands pin-point accuracy due to its primary purpose so if it's mainly made for macro, AF speed has to be sacrificed.

One of my friend has the 100L macro and I really find the AF speed taking slightly longer to achieve AF lock when taking macro.

If it was just a speck of dust (depending on the size) that will not have any impact on my photo, then I will consider it. However you should not just look at dust particles on the lens (inside and outside), you have to test their aperture, look if it was infested with fungus, look to see got focusing issue or not, etc. A thorough check on the lens is needed before committing to get it.

CZ ZE has af confirmation chips too. U can still assign the body to recongise the focusing reading. (duno e mechanical terms)
I micro-adjusted mine 50 1.4 and I am now happy to say its sharp wide open at 1.4, atleast to my degree of pixel peeping =P

I never used confirmation chips on my canon dslr before.

OT Was playing around with a d700, so quite amazed that it would tell you to turn which direction to get a sharp focus... haha

Not confirmation chip sold by those 3rd party stuff. Carls zeiss ZE version of lens all have circuitry that work with our canon dslr which will indicate the focus with a light in the viewfinder/a beep sound when we tune the focus ring on the lens. U should know that even with af canon lens at manual mode, we stil can achieve indication of obtaining focused spot right?
Hope that clear e doubt here =)

For the canon implementation it only alert you when you obtain focus on your selected point, while the Nikon have an indicate to let highlight to you the direction to move for fine tuning.

I just use my laptop connect to my cam and view at both 100% and 200% to find e sharpness (tunning micro-af adjust +/-) I looking for. Nikon one sounds kinda high tech but reliable anot is the question there =P

Personally I am not a Nikon D700 user myself, hence I would reserve my option about the reliability of their system.

I think we have OT too much on this thread... haha

is it possible to do macro using a canon 70-200 f4 USM? if so, what setup do you need?

I tried the 100mm f2.8L IS at Canon showroom recently. Those who mention that it is not suitable for portrait should really go try it out yourself and see. I think this is a value for money L lens, because it can be both a Macro and Portrait lens. In addition, it is not heavy at all, despite it's weather sealed body.

Not forgetting, you can go really close to the subject. If I did not recall wrongly, the MFD is only 30cm, compared to 135L 90cm.

I am sold on this lens already and will be getting it soon. My only consideration now is whether to get it brand new or used......

Yes, can indeed do portraits for this lens. Most 2nd hand selling around 1.1k but bnew cost just around 1.2++. The $100 diff just cant justify the worth that your paying for fr buying 2nd hand vs getting a bnew with 15 minths warranty.

That is my main concern. Saw a few on sale but I did not make any offer for them. No warranty set and priced quite high IMO. I don't want to take any risk for anything priced above $1k.

I have sent email to a few shops for quotes, guess I will buy brand new most likely.

weird that no one mentioned the efs-60mm macro (too many aLcoholics around hurhur)

a full fledge macro lens
yet tele enough on a crop for baby portraits

1. Limited budget to 1-1.2K (CHECKED)
2. Typo of shooting: portrait (baby) and macro and a bit of street/landscape (CHECKED)
3. As much as possible, one lens to buy(CHECKED)
4. Crop body(CHECKED)

personally i think the macro 100mm is too tele on a crop for baby shots. you might have to stand a few metres away to get more into the frame
