sorry, am just curious, are there actually people who rents cameras? I am not being sacarstic or being nasty here, I seriously just wanna know coz if there are, I dun mind renting out my set also man...

I think it good to have place to rent Full Outfit.. Just imagine if u have and important event to cover and suddenly your camera spoiled.. So with this renting services u can still shoot for your customer.... That what they do for NIKON Club members

Well this is what I think anyway..:D

I'm renting Jovedaddy's set to test out the 10D in the field. There could be people who want a camera for backup on assignments, to test-drive before purchase and so-on.

fwah... if like that.... I guess I should be renting out my 1Ds... cover the depreciation... haha

yeah. I'll rent out my equipment too but only if I can get insurance and know exactly what it covers....

ie: if someone scratches my camera/lens...someone has GOT to pay...

jovedaddy, I may want to rent the 10D (body only) from you. Will contact
you when I need it.

I've actually posted an ad to ask for rental of 10D last week, someone
responded but asked for $2000 for deposit !!! A bit absurd i felt, if I have
$2000 why shld I rent a 10D ?! May as well buy a 2nd hand one....

Well .. if you have $2000 that you CAN spend then yeah you better of buying 2nd hand .. BUT .. buy renting at least you got your $2000 back AND get the picture you want to take :bsmilie: ... anyway no offence ah .. just my 2 cents .. maybe the owner just worried kanna aeroplane and hence ask for ~value of the item you rent ... I'll do that as well if I want to rent out mine to complete stranger ...

Yeah...I can understand why the owner will ask for the value of the item I
rent, it is to protect his/her own interest. But what about the interest of the
person renting the equipment ? If the person were to fork out a few grand
as deposit and then "sway sway" the equipment died half way or died before
it can be used, the deposit will be confiscated as compensation. It is like
paying hugh sum of $$ to buy a spoilt equipment, think it is fair ? I dun mind
the high deposit if the equipment is still very new but not on an aged
equipment cos god knows how many ppl had rented or played with it before
me.

The above also just my 2 cents, not meant to kick a fight here.

COOKIEZ :
perhaps to explain the stand better -

Suppose you have a 10D which cost say now, SGD$2500 and of coz plus the rest of the accessories and stuff (flash, lens, CF card, batteries..etc) ... and you want to rent it out for say SGD$60 per day and a SGD$500 deposit.

I will definitely rent from you. Coz I would not return it to you as I would only stand to forfeit SGD$560 but what's that compare to at least SGD$2300 of "returns" if I sell your camera and stuff on the pretence that I lost it? Sure you can lodge a police report and stuff but you only requested for a SGD$500 deposit to "cover any damages or loss".

No agreement can sue me over it even if you have my IC.. unless you have a good lawyer to draft out a comprehensive rental agreement

Lesson learnt: protect your own investments.
Look for SzeKiat's post on equipment rental and his explaination on why he charges that high of a deposit which basically can pay for a new body or lens.

just my 2 cts worth :)

Well, will you pay a few grand for a camera to use it only once? No, I guess, unless you are super rich with money to burn. However, in the view of the person renting, it is a secure deposit. Sure there are insurance to cover stolen goods, but commerical insurance is very much more expensive then personal insurance for the equipment. You are supposed to check the equipment before you rent it, and I am quite sure the person renting would be reasonable to check the reason why the equipment is spoilt first, but sending it for repair. If the repair reported negligance, then it is fair the person renting charge the user. If the repair reported normal wear and tear, then the person renting should shoulder the cost.

my 2cts

thanks to all for the interesting discussion :) yes... main objective is to cover depreciation at an acceptable risk. that said, "acceptable risk" is highly subjective - please don't start a war on this subject here :). a new thread would be fine ;)

like igpenguin said, there are 2 main group of people who rents the equipment :
- those who want to test-drive the camera
- those who need a backup set for an important assignment

that said, i am just wondering how many people shoot paid assignments without a backup set?...especially for events/weddings. film cameras are cheap.... but don't think many people have DSLRs as backups.

i get to cover equipment depreciation. photog gets peace of mind with a backup body in the bag. it's win-win :) don't you think?
