With the recent free fall in Euro, would it be cheaper to buy the M9 in Europe + some lenses?

Anyone knows where is a good place to buy without VAT?

not sure whether got warranty problem anot for overseas set

even if leica warranty is international, does it mean must send back to Solms?

local Singapore M9 can just send to Schmidt, sure no problem

anybody can advise

you need to have patience to buy from them. Last I heard...no stock for since FEB!!!

Well, you have to send the M9 back to Solms to get it realigned.

Also, local distributors have a knack for sending items back to the OEM to get it fixed.

Schmidt would still honor the international warranty. However, if they need to ship a unit not supplied by them elsewhere for whatever reason, they will charge you for shipping -- not cheap. As with Leica, things get shipped a lot more than other brands. :dunno:

Another perk with local sets is the immediate and free service they provide if you walk in for a sensor cleaning, which they would otherwise charge SGD120 and make you wait a day or more. :complain:

I hear that with the low Euro, after VAT refund and GST evasion, you'd save around SGD1K+. That's slightly more than 10% savings depending on the deal you're able to get in SG. IMHO, the hassle, potential future charges and not supporting your local dealers make this less attractive than one would think. :hammer:

As the Euro continues to plummet, the temptation for buying it from Europe becomes more compelling. Now the EUR/SGD = 1.6900

M9 at Eur4,618 (without VAT and before shipping) = S$7,805

X1 at Eur1,303 (without VAT and before shipping) = S$2,202
http://www.shphoto.de/?gclid=CNbT6OzKiqICFcFS6wodmyX3UA

For the price of M9 in Singapore, I can get both M9 and X1 if I buy from Europe. Woot! Need to find a reputable retailer from Europe to buy from.

NS Ng, thanks for that. Will be shipping it to my friend in HK then getting someone to bring it back for me. I was told no taxes whatsoever if shipped to HK.

I have a few questions:

1. Is it under the Leica of Austria?

2. Are they going to charge the credit card when placing the order?

3. the waiting time?

Thanks,
GF

There is no GST in HK. If ship to Singapore, you will have to pay 7% GST on the landed cost.

No, this shop is not under Leica of Austria.

Best you check directly with them for payment and availability.

I have contacted a Leica dealer in Germany, but this company requires upfront payment.

Here is a list of leica dealers, http://www.nemeng.com/leica/004e.shtml

As a tourist returning from Europe, I don't think the gst rule applies. Usually we can buy whatever we want and still the Sg customs will not charge you gst. I have bought numerous stuff all above S$1000 including bring back a D90, 2 laptops from Japan.

My friend just returned from the US a month ago with 3 bags of goodies (electronic items including the Ipad) and still was not charged. Bear in mind that usually GST applies if you ship from overseas (which means you are doing IMPORTs into Singapore)

So if you are flying to Europe or Japan you can shop to your hearts content and not worry.

As a tourist returning from Europe, I don't think the gst rule applies.

If you are buying as tourist in Europe, you need to do the following:-

1. Make sure the retailer is certified "Tax Free Shopping" by customs. Usually, only big retailers have this certification. Shops that are not certified Tax Free will charge you VAT and you cannot reclaim the VAT that you paid;

2. When you buy, you must ask retailer to fill up the Tax Refund form and give you a copy.

3. When you buy, you must pay full amount of VAT. You reclaim the VAT later at airport.

4. At the last airport of departure when leaving Europe, you need to visit (i) customs office to get chop on VAT form; and (ii) visit the VAT Refund office to get VAT refund. These are 2 very long (separate) queues, for which you need to go airport early and queue.

5. The goods must be "unused" and remain packaged when inspected by the VAT officer. If the item is open and being used, the officer will refuse to chop the form.

Some intermediary companies are willing to refund you VAT at the point of purchase, but on the condition that you need to visit customs at airport to chop the Tax Refund form and mail the chopped form back to them. If you fail to do this, these intermediary companies will debit your credit card of the amount they gave you. This means: there is no way you can avoid visiting the customs for inspection.. This is very sianz...coz there will be long queue, and you must go early to airport to queue up. Do not be misled by these intermediary companies. Either way, you need to visit customs at airport to claim VAT.

In certain EU countries, alot of things can go wrong in the 5 steps above. Usually, the queue is very long, and you must specially go airport early to queue. Some lousy airport the queue is so long, you need to abandon VAT and board the plane. So there is slight risk.

WHEN YOU RETURN TO SINGAPORE

When you return to Singapore, if you have brand unused new goods worth more than 300-400 bucks in your luggage, you are obliged to declare. You cannot walk thru green alley.

You will be charged GST if you declare.

I leave you to imagine how to handle the rest

Just open the item lor ... lol it is yours right since you bought it then open it to use it lor. Very difficult to qualify what is import and what is your hand carry items for items like laptop, camera, video camera etc.

I do remember that at one time there is a leica passport given out to all new leica cameras bought in the uk. Go to reddotcamera.com I heard very good reviews for this shop from the overseas forums. This is very good because if anything (accident) happens including dropping the camera and it does not work anymore, leica is going to give you a new one.

I wonder if local retailers give you the same leica passport.
