Yup, it's a minor issue. Just something that is constantly reminded to me though photos compared didn't really show much of a difference (at least those that we took). But was just surprised that the review's photos as compared to 300D showed 300D had sharper and better contrast pictures, considering that 300D had older technology, so I figured it is abt the ISO100/ISO200 differences loh...
Sharper -> turn the sharpening to "high"
Better contrast -> Search for "Custom curve" in this forum

The differences between ISO 100 and 200 for any of the current DSLRs, if any, are minimal today and won't turn out in prints. You really need to do pixelpeeping to notice the difference.

Colours and sharpness could be tweaked via camera settings and postprocessing but the quality of lenses used is also important. Top range lenses from the various manufacturers would generally give better colours, contrast and sharpness vs the lower end lenses from the same manufacturers (I don't see much point comparing across manufacturers).

I'm not sure if it is that simple. At first glance, I am thinking that there is very aggressive noise reduction going on. There can be little to moderate loss of detail, depending on the ISO you go up to. I'm going to borrow a D50 and see if the same loss of detail is in the RAW files, or just a characteristic of the in-camera jpeg processing.

I believe DPR used the kit lens for both 300D and D50 for comparison, so it may be that the new 18-55mm may not be as good as the 300D's kit lens?
But i dun think DPR twicked any settings for sharpening and contrast, they should have left it at the default settings.

To answer my own queries, if anyone is interested.

Jpeg straight out of the camera definitely looks like it is aggressively noise reduced. Comparisons with a D70 shows that there is some loss of detail on the D50 images.

When the D50's NEFs are converted by ACR, it still looks just as soft as it does from the jpegs from the camera.

However, when you use Nikon Capture, things turn around. I was able to get far more detailed and crisp pictures, although the D70's were still sharper and slightly more detailed.

In all, at that price point, still a great camera. More responsive than the D70, and pixel peepers will probably want a better camera anyway.

I don't think Phil used the 18-55mm. He did state in the comparison shots that he used the 50mm f/1.4.
