If I downgraded from D700 and D300s, it would be the economical reason.

Other than that. D700 is far better lens than D300s :nono:

whether fx or dx..depending on your preference n subject u shooting...u may want to use dx today but fx tomorrow...buy both if you have money.

Have both DX is not advisable. Have both FX also not too effective ;)

If had money, I woud prefer to have one DX and one FX.
They can complete each other.

thumbs up to that. DX for additional reach (without teleconverter), FX for wide.

hi, i'm the once , the finally downgrade from D700 to D300s.

i just get the body from JB by it 2 days times,
i'm really like the D300s features with Short video movie.
and the x1.5 for prime 50mm f1.4 = 75mm it's good shots for portrait.
so not need thinking to buy 85mm f1.4 for FX body.
it's have must more investment for FX lens.

by now i'm really happy with D300s all DX , FX lens i can used.

buy from JB is saving pocket money for coming CNY.
haha.

i remember reading somewhere that on a FX body, at the same aperture as a DX body, the resultant image on the FX has a smaller/thinner DOF. can someone clarify? :dunno:

NO laaa. In DX body, the focal length is 1.5 x or 1.6 x longer. So in comparison with fixed distance to the object, DX body gives thinner DOF ;)

Ahh, ok i jsut researched a bit, so FX would have a smaller DOF when its of equivalent focal length, like say 50mm DX vs 75mm FX.

third post.

The longer the focal length of your lens, the shallower the depth of field for a given subject distance. That is why it is near impossible to get focus isolation with compact cameras.

if you do not shoot telephoto pics like birds, then keep the D700.... my opinion is it is much better than the D300s...
YMMV :)

Agreed. For things that u can't get closer to, APC-sensor still the choice for its higher pixel density (the resolution pixels are squeezed closer together).. I.e. Macro/Birds Photography.

With the same lens zoomed out to the same maximum focal length, the image from the APC will be sharper than a crop from the middle of the FF sensor (as the latter bound to degrades in IQ)

For anything else.. FX is the way to go :)

yes, FX has a thinner DOF than DX

1st scenario, a 50mm DX vs a 75mm FX, the FX will have thinner DOF because the focal length is longer. longer focal length = less DOF

2nd scenario, a 50mm DX vs a 50mm FX, FX will still have thinner DOF, *assuming* that the picture is framed in the same way. because the FX is wider, you have to get closer to achieve this. the closer you are to the object = the lesser DOF you will get

so either way, FX tends to have less DOF than DX

your new D300s , how much u bought it & which place in JB ?

I don't mean to be rude.... There are a lot of mention of cropping here. Isn't it fundamental for one to frame the picture correctly when taking the photo, before any crop is attempted later in PP? And shouldn't cropping be used sparingly, for changing perspective, rather than bringing the subject "closer"?

D700 and D300 (with S or not) are not comparable. They are built for different purposes and markets, although lately I use D700 almost exclusively because of my new found love about available-light (or ambient light) photography. D300 just cannot beat D700 in this perspective.

FYI for 2nd scenario.
50mm DX vs 50 mm FX. The 50 mm DX gives thinner DOF.
With note that distance is same (fixed) from camera to subject.

mee too angsana, A round $2150.
with Kingston 8GB (Class 6)

honestly if you do not understand the reasons for a bigger sensor nor can tell the difference in IQ then stick with a DX camera. ultimately the camera that motivates you to take more photographs is the correct one.

ha ha. I know d700 is better IQ and higher ISO, but 1 week just touch 1 time, so for me is wasted money to keep in dry cabinet. After selling my d700 and get d300s so i still can topup 1 to 2 lens extra it's why not. I have to investment the pro lens like 24-70 afs. And now i can used alot dx kit lens, so i'm very happy for dx crop 1.5x sensor. And now i used the 180mm afd prime x1.5 = 270mm telephoto ha ha it's best for portrait and birdding shoots with light weight body and lens too.
