oh okay, but what's their respective sweet spot? since most ppl don't use their primes @ largest aperture. and any more 'value' substitutes for them? i'm looking for actually even shorter focal lengths.. maybe <30mm for a 1.6x body. suggestions?

I use my 35mm f/2 wide open. Sharpness is acceptable to me, for web and 4R prints. I'd stop down to f/2.2 or f/2.5 for large prints like S8R, and I find sharpness at that level to be quite acceptable too. This is the 35mm f/2 on a 5D, at f/2.2:

my favorite lens that literally kicked off my 17-55mm.. Don't like my 17-55mm f2.8 now just because of this lens.
