why not carry a tripod? solve all your problems
can shoot 30sec exposures somemore

if weight is so much of an issue, then it is even easier to use a P&S camera with VR and a smaller tripod

so the weight of a P&S + smaller tripod will be even lighter than a DSLR setup

anyway don't mind me, i am just old fashioned

if shoot events, tripod is troublesome.
a P&S cannot produce good pics under low light.
