The question if PR contributes if of course a yes. However I think the main grouse is that only in Singapore, are PRs and FTs are precieved to be treated on a equal standing by the govt. In countries all over the world, nations protect their own. Make them feel there is a reason to be a citizen. Here the growing feeling is that as a local, they end up being marginalised by MNCs for having to serve reservists, pay CPF etc
The problem is each time this topic starts, we will have those who will always bring up the lazy Singaporean and hardworking PR or FT. Things are not as simple as that. There are many hungry and hardworking Singaporeans who work hard with no end in sight and there are too many FTs that live a king's life here. End of the day, whether or not it is true that FTs and PRs take up more jobs, unless this is addressed. A new urban myth that will erode voter confidence will grow. Now the next flash point is the IRs. According to authorities, the IRs are needed to bring in more jobs. However there is a growing rumour in "coffeeshops" that a significant number of jobs in IRs will be given to FTs. Reasoning being Singaporeans are not trained to work in IRs...... True or not, I guess we will know when the IR opens.
