RAW + JPEG!! Best of both world! :)

hi guys,

i have a qns here, if e image i shoot is in raw format (NEF), thereafter, i convert it to jpeg and then do the post processing. image quality will be the same from taking jpeg straight from dslr? i dunno why i can't open up nef file using capture nx2.. is there something i miss?
any gurus can advise?

PS: sry for posting in this thread.

I shoot everything raw too but at 24.5mp or 31mp respectively.. my hdd is shrinking awfully fast..

I shoot mostly in raw so that I can do as much post editing as possible on some of the photos.

RAW only for adverse lighting conditions (and important occassions like wedding) where I can't determine the white balance due to various environmental factors, JPG for all the rest of the shots ;)

jpeg.

Used to shoot raw. However am using jpeg now in order to get more shots per CF card. :)

RAW! coz i still suck at taking photo, raw will usually save the day!! ;)

I like to do it RAW

raw + jpeg small :D

raw cus can edit

jpeg small for preview and straight to web posts

...let me first start by saying that i am no guru on raw...some experience yes, that is becos i only stick to nikon and its related software.

raw format image is uncompressed image and processing should be done while still in .nef file. thereafter, convert it to jpeg. the quality of the converted image is definitely higher than the one obtained directly from the dslr (camera jpeg output).

if you are using nikon cam to capture raw images, then use ViewNX (with NEF Codec - online installation to ViewNX) to view yr .nef images and as well as processing them. you may convert yr processed .nef images singly or batch to a new folder. at any time, you may use ViewNX to access yr processed .nef images or even reprocess them and convert to jpg.

the only reason i can offer you as to why you are unable to open up yr .nef files using capture nx2 is because of incompatibility. raw format files from yr camera model may not be supported by this software or maybe only up to file conversion to jpg.

can try other raw format editors, eg. lightroom, cs4, capture 1 pro v5.0
check out the software supportability for yr camera model.

i hope this info helps abit....happy shooting!!!

RAW always.
coz I'm a noob, and RAW allows me to correct my mistakes. (WB for example).

I shoot RAW only for important shots (landscapes, setup portraits, product shooting) that i would enhance further in Photoshop or Camera Raw.

Raw gives me the capability to adjust the white balance after the shot was taken, (in camera raw there's a dropdown to choose from Tungsten, Cloudy etc which is you can see which one is more color acurate) do all the color correction, clean up etc without destructing the image.

whereas in JPG you have to set the white balance first (WB-auto works for me most of the time) in your camera before taking the shot (if you haven't missed it), (its trial and error if you are not aware how your camera behaves in light). but you can still color correct the image manually but it is more complicated.

I shoot 95% Jpg medium, 3% Jpg Large, 2% Raw :D

I shoot more RAW with the GF1 becos' the sensor is not so good with orange and yellow in jpg

Need to then "develop" into jpg for most printout and easy uploading for friends.

Bro can I ask what you use to convert GF1 raw into jpeg?
I'm thinking of buying Lightroom as I heard it is very good.

Thanks!
