Do you really need a flash?

I brought an umbrella setup with mounted 580EXII wirelessly triggered, complete with lightstand and everything, to a recent school dinner in a hotel for group shots. When I set it up everyone was like what the heck is that? So extra for what? Then I shot them with their "wth" faces looking at the umbrella and showed them the pics. Everyone went like OKAYOKAY TAKE ME!! Haha..

Even when flash photography is not necessary, I do use my flash as an AF assist in low light. I just disable the flash in my camera =)

since u r quoting 3rd party lens,
how about quoting 3rd party flashes to be fair?

my 17-55 is $1280 n the 24-70 bought a long time ago,
was on the other end of 1k+.

Also, if your subject is too far from the camera, flash is useless.

if the subject is too far for my Canon 580/Metz 58,
that would be more than a 100ft.
my eyeball mkI is useless at that distance to see my subject.

have been shooting conventions, particular cosplays and feel that my inbuilt flash is super inadequate... either too harsh, or can't fill up the subject .. looking to invest in a 2nd hand 430EX or II soon

but a recent telephoto lens have zap away substantial savings ;p

just an ordinary top-up card with white sticker infront then insert on top of the built in diffuser.
