learnt the hard way that i should read the manual

had a coolpix p1... after 1.5 yrs of owning it, then i realised what certain functions were for.. (eg the aperture/shutter setting, exposure compensation etc).. always hated the pics taken as it was too blur due to shake or flash was to harsh ..

yes, mainly for the CF explanations and AE/compensation settings. think Canonites need the manual more than Nikonians, since Nikon DSLR bodies are riddled with buttons whereas Canon's are very sparse (functions hidden in menus).

:bsmilie:

Manual is a wonderful book!

My first digital cam is a coolpix 885.Maybe not everyone knows wat this is.
Anyway, that book, has become "kiam cai" already. Its my first book into photography. Its my fundamentals of photography.

When I got my 885,the manual taught me alot of beginners knowledge.I learnt from it.upgraded step by step from then on to what I have today.

So I really wanna stressed the importance of reading the instruction manual. =)

*????????* ("Every book got its 'gold' inside")

I briefly scanned through mine and 'played' around with camera first. If there was anything I didn't know I'd just refer. ;)

read it to refer to those custom functions or indicators that doesnt make sense to me.. :embrass:

yes! haha..

Never ... even if got any doubts just post it here lor ... responses are pretty fast though ... :bsmilie:

responses like "RTM" and "RTFM"? :bsmilie: those are pretty fast to type too.

for my 40D i quickly glance thru only. since i've used the 300D, 350D, 400D, and 30D b4 i bought mine, so more or less familiar.

I only read if there are obscure functions I want to set. Most things are intuitive... at least for Canon cameras. :)

I'll definitely read the manual. There's nothing much to do when you do your first charge! A good way to keep yourself busy. heh.

I started shooting with my slr for about 6 months before i decided i wanted to know how to use the more advanced/custom functions, then i read the manual

i think the tittle should be re phrased to " do you read the manual before operating the camera after openning the box?"

offcoarse, all of us read the manual. but when?;p

as an experience & asked from friends, we/they only read instruction manual if i/we cant operate a certain function of my/our camera.

now, i download the manual to read first before buying the camera.

Do you know what is a generic question?

For me, the manual is very important. I download the manual and read to find out if the equipmenet (a) meets my needs (b) easy to use and (c) have constraints that I can live with if I buy the equipment. Point (c) is important because marketing brochures will leave this out or put it is very fine prints.

After I purchase the equipment, I will read it once again focusing on the points marked 'caution', 'danger' and 'important'. This way I don't do something stupid like forcing a lever the wrong way and breaking it :-)

The third time I read the manual is after I have played with the equipment for some time and then when I read, I may find shortcuts and new features to try out.

This goes for all the equiment I have be it a computer, pda, phone or camera.

I read the manual because I didn't know how aperture and time were related when i first bought my DSLR.
However I didn't read in depth, just read what I wanted to know, but I carry it around should I need to find out more info.

this is exactly my point, you read the manual because you dont know how aperture works. what if you already know, do you care still reading it?

the only manual i read is when i bought my 1st dslr which is 400D. but hav't even open the plastic cover of my 5D & 40D. i can operate almost any thing with this two.:)

Do you bother to read the camera's instruction manual when you first purchased the camera or subsequently refer to it for certain features/functions?

Yes, but usually I notice the info I need is not clearly described. :thumbsd: SO realised there is no point reading the manual. Read the forum is better.

Interface of cameras are not so different from each other, so I skip the basics and go straight to the list of custom functions.

Yes i do read once, while the camera battery is charging.
then every other month to see if i missed anything from the manual!

sidetrack a bit, I found the Canon 40D white paper to be use full.

Read everything and make what you spend count!
