Do you like pre-asph or asph lenses?

I know there is quite a debate on this one, wonder how you feel....

I like Japanese RF lenses. They are more like pre-asph.

i only got CV and pre-asph glass ):

The current aspherical design has a sharper, almost crystal like clarity even when wide open. For example, the 90mm AA, is a very sharp lens that will not be kind to a lady's face! The older 90 'Cron, is not as sharp, especially when wide open. It has a nice smoothness when wide open, but stopped down it is sharp.

There is no right or wrong answer, just one's preference.

Agree, it's about preference....

Personally it's a mixed bag for me. I thought the 28 summicron asph was a little sharp for me, but the 35 summilux asph is perfect. I love me 50mm summilux pre asph and while the 50mm asph looks nice and sharp, I dont get the same nice feel i get from my 35 and 50 summilux, so I'm giving the 50mm asph a miss. And yes, I agree, the 90mm AA is pretty sharp and modern looking. I shoot mix of color and black and white.

it really depends on many things, result, effect and value of that lens against your expectation.

I owned the 35 'lux asph, 90 AA, all these were superb performers, especially in terms of sharpness. But among many I've owned, I like results produced by my 35mm 4th, 50mm 'cron and DR, surprisingly, none were asph? I wonder why.

too sharp! too clinical...hehehe

Maybe I tend to mirror my shi fu - Gommy, who taught me the ways of the RF and poisoned me as well. :bsmilie:

I like the 28mm summicron asph, the first lens I was advised to buy and I must say good choice for my cropped M8. I like the modern sharpness that is sharp but not clinical (oops tend to use the same words). But frankly, it is the only very very expensive and only Leica lens I own. I had thought the Canon 85f1.2L was expensive until I got this (at least 2.3K more)!

For the 50mm, I use the Canon 50 f1.4 LTM. Relatively small but not light. Very nice subtle glow in images shot wide open with excellent bokeh. Not too saturated colours and slightly kinder to pock marks on faces. This is certainly non-aspherical. I like the price. Very good value for money. Pics below show a different character, very unlike the aspherical 50 summicron.

I believe my CV 15mm f4.5 Super Heliar is aspherical?

thanks for sharing Northernlights..... I'm actually picking up a 28/2 Summicron from Schmidt this afternoon for an o'seas friend..... will have it for a week and a half before I travel and pass it to him....

Listening and see the images, am now very tempted to put it thru its paces on my M5 this weekend..... cant wait to see first hand the bokeh kekeke :)

In 2004 or thereabouts, the 28 cron cost *only* $2800 NEW :) And guess what, it's the SAME lens! (though the newer one probably has the 6 bit coding, which is now actually of little use on the new M9...)

Leica prices have really gone through the roof these days!

Lenses' prices had gone up significantly especially after the release of M8 when there were a worldwide shortages of lenses. No new lenses to buy then & that drove the prices of used lenses up as well. I supposed with M9, prices will probably go up again. :(

if i wanted it so sharp until i can count the pores... i would not be shooting rf and film...
