Intro: I am a novice....
IMHO, if you are doing a lot of outdoor, I think L lens is good investment as it keep your lens optics protected from dust and the solid built make it last a long time...From what I read... it seems that certain EF lens produces same high quality output as the L lens...

Happy Shooting... :)

For most of us Singaporeans its psychological that we want the best (even though we clearly will not utilize it to its full potential). If you can break out of that mindset, there's no reason for choosing a ridiculously expensive L over a value-for-money 3rd party pro lens.

haha
i got the money to buy leh
but i still bought the cheapo EF-S 55-250mm IS to complete the range with my EF-S 18-55mm IS. Cos i tink i wld give myself 1 yr that i improve my skills using a sub standard lens before upgrading to L lens. If i can have decent photos from sub standard lens, i tink L lens will give me a better grade photo after i upgraded.

2cent thos

if one is expecting a black/white difference between consumer & L lenses, then he/she will be disappointed. its not just about aspherical/UD/flourite elements, sometimes you see the difference, sometimes you don't. and even L lenses have their failings. the person who buys L lenses is the same person who'll spend more on a Breitling/TagHeuer over a Seiko Kinetic/Casio GShock, or a B&W speaker over a Mission.

I don't have to buy an L lens but I have to buy a good lens.
Examples of non-L good lens are prime lens, macro lens, and some EFS lens with asperical/UD/fluoride glass such as 10-22. :)
Exceptions also go to special lens like fish eye, etc.
Special exceptions to third party lens like Voigtlander. ;)

so I guess those who can't afford L lenses can only stay at home and take pictures of their toes then.......

for once i agree with you.

Thats really just your view on it and it doesn't represent the majority.
that is also my view and i am happy that you are the minority

EVERY CANON EOS USER HAS TO BUY AT LEAST ONE L LENS AND USE IT OTHERWISE MIGHT AS WELL DONT USE CANON. WHAHAHA:cool:

lets face it, everyone WANTS an L lens, its just human nature to want the best. but don't forget that proper metering/exposure/composition skills and good knowledge of Photoshop can give you as good a picture taken with non-L lenses. sometimes when i look at the prices of L lenses, they cost as much as a brand new mid-range DSLR body! reality check. then again, being human we overlook that and its the build quality/optics/results that count.
