so tempted but don have enuff cash on hand so
NO!!!

they are beyond my reach too

Although I carry an L lens, I STRONGLY disagree that people need to own them.

There are many photographs that do not require the highest resolution. Furthermore, distortion, CA, color and contrast can EASILY be fixed in post-processing. And unless you throw your lenses around as though they cost pennies, you also need not worry about built.

On the other hand, if you are a reporter engaged in capturing images of war, civil unrest or water sports, then you are advised to get some weather sealed L lenses.

I use to think the same way, own many 3rd party and non L lens.....but since I own my first L? The whole dry cabinate changed to L's only......it was like a natural process. I had non-L lens that failed me twice when I was oversea(Screw drop out/AF spoil). Since then I cannot trust the non-L anymore. No that L-lens will never fail, but the chances of it failing comparing to non-L is alot lower!

I agree  other than prime... I will avoid non-L. (10-22 is an exception since there isn't a substitute of the wide focal len in the L family). I used to tell myself... when you use an L lens and the pic fails.. it is the photographer not the lens  L RULES!!!

I was once told by a master photographer tt if you use a very high end cam (5D or 1DsMkII), you will need to use good lenses ("L" lah!). When you blow up the picture, then all the flaws will show up - chromatic aberrations, fringing, color rendition, etc.

What do you guys think? :dunno:

Well then it leads to the next question. How many people here actually blow up their pictures to a size which the flaws start to show?

Caught between buying the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and Canon 70-200 f4.0L... both are about the same price...
What are your views?

The L....:bsmilie: :bsmilie: !!

Why? One major reason: Resale value...

I think a flawless picture is more of a self satisfaction... Each individual has different perspective of this hobby... I, personally, love to blow up to actual size and look at sharpness and flaws :sweatsm: (Maybe it is just my bad habbit)

For me is not about just flawless, which I don't think any lens can claim that it produces flawless images. It is really about saving time doing color correction and all the post processing. There are times when I open up an image in CS2 and I asked myself, what should I adjust in this image? Everything looks fine to me. That is the time I realised the value of the L lens. I remember the days when I use alot of 3rd party lens and non L canon lens, I have to edit every image before I can post them or print them. Takes up a lot of precious time doing all those processing. I have even created a standard action where I apply to every images after I take them, I don't even have to preview the pics that I took, cos I know every single pics have to be sharpen that much, and the color tone has to be adjusted by that amount, so that the pics will look alright or good.

Do I need them? NO
Do I want them? YES

My inner conflict tells me that if I can afford it, go ahead with L. I don't have to worry whether the pictures I taken can be sharper or not. Just shoot, shoot, shoot. All L lens also usually focus faster with USM.

Another inner conflict also ask me whether how often I'm going to use the L lens. If my usage is more for walk around range, I can justify for the cost.

Nowadays EFS lens picture quality can be as good as L. e.g 17-55mm F2.8 IS. But it's as expensive as L and I managed to talk myself out of it.

At the end, it's how you convince yourself from a want to a need.
