Do you find the fujifilm xf 18-55mm sharp ?

Maybe something is wrong with your copy.

The 50-230 is quite mediocre.

Agreed, the XF18-55 performs much better then the XC50-230.

Will help if you post up some full resolution images (flickr)

I think that the 18-55 is a great lens, great build quality, f2.8 on the 18mm end, seriously i think its good value for money and the best out there as far as kit lenses go in my opinion.

There were reviews that 50-230 is actually quite a sharp lens except for the slow speed and quality. i dunno why but the pictures actually look sharper taken with the 50-230 compared to the 18-55..........however, i think my 50-230 also got problem as the stabilization motor is making some noise.... if i send the lens to fuji service, they can check right ?

so far i am most happy with my 10-24

Well, I don't even know your basis of comparison.

Any example? Otherwise it's just talk, you say I say, nobody can say for sure if you're being unreasonable in your comparisons, or if you really have a bad copy of 18-55.

In a control and quantifiable test of the sharpness, mount it on a tripod to shot, this will rule out user problem.

if i suspect there is a problem and send it to fujifilm, do you know how are they going to check ?
does anyone who suspect that they have a bad copy of fuji lens send it back before ?

They will just test for resolution lor... Then adjust the elements if required....

IMHO, essentially, it is about trouble shooting if a problem is user induced or the equipment.

Have you posted sample photos of your "not sharp" conditions at about 1920 pixels long?
You can try doing that and perhaps the experienced photographers here can have a look at it.

If one is certain it is the equipment, send it back to the OEM and have it rectified.

Finally, if owner is still unsatisfied when the item is taken back, the last option is to ask if the OEM is willing to have a one to one exchange which they are not obliged to but no harm asking.

Hi, I have tried posting photos but they don't appear for some reasons. I will try again.

In my opinion it is very sharp, look at the fur around the eye. If this is not crop, the "soft" area is due to thin DOF.

yes, i find it quite sharp also at this focal length and aperture. However i think the issue is at 55mm focal length wide open, which i often find images to be "soft".

Wait till you try the 50-140/2.8... then you will say your 18-55 is trash again.

you have too to remember 18-55 is a kit lens. and compared to other kit lenses out there, it is already pretty darn good.

what do you think ?

The other digital cam i own is a panasonic compact LX5 which i use to shoot products and got quite good quality out of it. when i shoot still life with the 18-55, i somehow find the images not as sharp.

I find even the F4 sufficiently sharp for me. Look at the eyes area, you can even see the veins in the eyes. That's certainly considered sharp by my standards. Thin depth of field yes, sharp, also yes to me
