Maybe something is wrong with your copy.
The 50-230 is quite mediocre.
Agreed, the XF18-55 performs much better then the XC50-230.
Will help if you post up some full resolution images (flickr)

In a control and quantifiable test of the sharpness, mount it on a tripod to shot, this will rule out user problem.
if i suspect there is a problem and send it to fujifilm, do you know how are they going to check ?
does anyone who suspect that they have a bad copy of fuji lens send it back before ?
IMHO, essentially, it is about trouble shooting if a problem is user induced or the equipment.
Have you posted sample photos of your "not sharp" conditions at about 1920 pixels long?
You can try doing that and perhaps the experienced photographers here can have a look at it.
If one is certain it is the equipment, send it back to the OEM and have it rectified.
Finally, if owner is still unsatisfied when the item is taken back, the last option is to ask if the OEM is willing to have a one to one exchange which they are not obliged to but no harm asking.
