For me, if i am doubtful, I will want others to justify my intention before I buy, and most of the time, I will be discouraged by them. Examples, the iPad, the M9, the Hussies, G2 etc. But if I am sure, I will just buy it without any consultation from anyone, before or after the purchase (eg: the Iphone 4, GF1, etc.)

We should say "YES", and encourage them to buy immediately. When they ask A or B is better, ask them to buy both and write a review for us. After they brought and start a thread, we should praise them and shower them will love, let them feel that the money is well spent.

Then I will say this -
Every one of us buy things (not necc photo equipment) for various reasons.
- Some buy to show off to others. When the novelty wears off, they'll dump it.
- Some buy to make themselves happy because wearing these (e.g. clothes, shoes, watches) and/or holding these in their hands (cameras, hand bags etc..) give them an immeasurable sense of achievement: "I have finally attained this!".
- Some buy to make full use of the item's capabilities. E.g "wah, this watch can have compass, barometer, altimeter and all that for my mountain climbing.."
No.3 type really buy it for the genuine use of the item and they don't really need others to tell them whether it is good buy or not, for they already know in depth, the function of the item.

Whilst I agree a lot of it could be down to spoon-feeding culture, Let's not forget how much CS is seen as a trusted source.
I always view online reviews with a little distrust given that I have no idea of the motivation of the reviewer. Are they being paid to be objective or paid to promote something?
I view CS as a more trusted source as most of us are photographers first and professional reviewers/commenters second. I value the honesty and real-life experience given in responses here on the forum over a review that took place maybe 2+ years ago after 1 weeks use.
That said, I always do my homework first and try to ask intelligent questions about whatever the item is I am buying rather than ask should I buy product X or product Y.
I think it may be more around how the question is phrased.
At the end of the day the choice is mine, as is the money used from my wallet.

CS is a trusted source, but is it a reliable source ? I think when someone gives an answer, the answer is somewhat biased in that the person already has a vested interest in the product . ie he already owns it. He is not going to shoot himself in the foot and criticize the item, after all if he should decide to sell it at a later date and people do a search of his postings, they may come across his criticism post.
As for websites that have reviews, dpreview and photozone are two websites that offer good insight. They handle, test and write about different cameras and lenses day in day out. What they can discover in "one week" and co-relate to their experience with other products is more valuable than a comment given by a fellow photographer who may not be as well exposed. After all, these guys run technical tests and compare performances of item in question to competitor's offering. How many local shooters have this kind of exposure to different equipment or spend the time to set up and shoot similar scene(s) under controlled conditions for comparisons ?
The key to taking advice, be it from a website or a CS member, is down to discernment, the ability to distinguish between good and biased / irrelevant advice.

That is why there are so many die hard fans from every camera brand, they don't want to look stupid after they invested $$$ in that brand. :bsmilie:

Yep, but I find there are some brands with some more hardcore users than others. Maybe theirs is better, but there was a time when I found some Oly and Pentax users hardselling, for whatever reason, that their brands were better than the rest. Generally I find Canon and Nikon users better in presenting a more even comparison - could be that long ago before I was active, there was a brand-war or that moderators tend to step in at the slightest one-is-better-than-the-other Canon vs Nikon comparison, but that's what I have observed so far. :dunno:
