I think Marc is referring to Matrix TTL and plain old TTL on SB-80DX, and not matrix or spot metering. Those with D70 and SB-800 can ignore. Seems like everyone talking about different thing in this thread, very confusing.

:bsmilie: :bsmilie: too true. i-TTL matrix metering so far works great with my D70 and the SB800

Though the comments about matrix vs TTL flash metering are mainly correct, the main reason for the underexposure you experienced is actually a mistake in your setting.

In a lowlight situation where ambient levels are below the default sync speed of 1/60s(Program/Aperture modes), using exposure compensation will only modulate your flash output and do nothing to your ambient.

Whether you are using Matrix or plain TTL, -1EC is equal to -1FEC since the shutter speed doesn't change.

This behaviour applies to both nikon and minolta flash systems.

User111 has already pointed this out.

Thanks for pointing out. I didnt know that man.

Getting a bit of headache, are we talking about i-ttl in D70/ SB800 combo?
For D70:
In my experiments, I set my min flash sync mode to 1/15 (or less, and dial camera FEC to -1, then flash FEC to +1. . I find that this allows me to have ambient at -1 exposure, and perfect exposure on the main subject. Can any tell me if this is the way the settings work in theory?

Of course this method is a bit of headache, since you have to check that 1/15 shutter speed will actually allow a -1 exposure.. sometimes too dark , which make me wish for a f2.8 !

of course got to consider other things such as WB, motion blur, etc

But the end result is more atmospheric than poor flash blasting!
