Do not go to the camera workshop in peninsular!

of course, if you come into my shop and took a lens for testing outside the shop. it make sense to make you leave your other camera behind. this is so you will not run away with the lens....
i think he did nothing wrong.
if you think you look young, he probably think the same and did not think you have $$$ to spend.
common sense.

Since the shop keeper does not know you personally, I think it's only fair that you leave something valuable for him in exchange for the lens tryout outside his shop. He trusted you that there's indeed a 5D mkII. It's the same no matter what you buy or where you buy. "Loyal" customer will always get preferential treatment. We all have a " better to be safe than sorry" attitude isn't ? I'm pretty sure he will even let you try a $10k lenses outside his shop without asking for "deposit" if you became his loyal customer. :dunno:

You are trying out a lens out of the shop? do you find outside any wider than inside the shop with 10-17mm?
Of course the salesperson must be weary about certain things, its his rice bowl we're talking about. the shop can sue you for defamation through the web and use your thread as a legal subject if they find that its an unjust accusation from you.

Yoz, bros/sis: stimbijik, Old Boy, Zekai.

I think what the original poster wrote is:
While I was trying it on my 40D, he told me to leave my bag with my 5DM2 in it and try the lens outside the shop.

It's the shopkeeper who is asking Wackyzacky to test the lens outside the shop.

Wackyzacky:
For confident matters, I always think of it this way:
The $ is mine, the goods is yours. It's mutually exclusive. If I don't like the shopkeeper's attitude he/she can wait for another business. I might not be their only customer... but they still have to pay the rent while waiting for another business. I still got upper hand.

Hello clubsnappers, i just went down to peninsular to check out the tokina 10-17mm lens. i brought my 40D and my 5DM2 bodies down hoping to try the lens on my camera bodies. I went into the shop and I enquired about the lens. So I asked the man if I could try the lens on and he told me that I had to buy it if I tried it. I knew something was fishy because I have read here that I should not buy from a shop that doesn't allow me to try the lens...

This is where your attitude towards the sales person turned negative.

...Soon after that, the man asked me what camera body I had and I, thinking maybe he'll let me try it if he knew i wasn't playing around with him, I told him I had the 40D and the 5DM2. He started opening the box and told me I could try it. He didn't let me put the lens on myself claiming that if I used it then it'll be like selling it to other people second-hand and i was like what?! are you kidding(obviously i didnt say that!).
You felt offended again because he treated you like a kid. Afraid that you will scratch the lens mount so he insist on putting on the lens for you.

So he asked me what was my chances of buying the lens and I just said 80% althought if i get it like tmr or smth i wont go back... While I was trying it on my 40D, he told me to leave my bag with my 5DM2 in it and try the lens outside the shop. When I was done testing it out, he chased me out of the shop telling me to try more(ironic, i thought he said no trying?!). I had this feeling that he wanted to take my 5DM2 or something like that, I just could sense it so i watched him through the lens.
because of the negative feeling, you completely don't trust the guy and was worry that he might steal your 5D2 so your defense system is on full alert.

He offered me 900 for the lens which i thought was okay but i'm not too confident i'll get what i pay for(warranty and all) especially cos this is a second and first hand shop so you also won't know if they put a second hand lens inside.
You should have left the place at this point because even if the lens is perfectly fine with a very attractive price, you will still worry about the warranty (whether it is a grey set) or worst - a 2nd hand lens.

Two mins after i came back in, another man came in and enquired about a lens asking another shop keeper to let him try the lens and the guy did it willingly and i was like WTH?!
You are now totally pissed.

So while i was leaving, I tried to sound like a rich man son and pretended not to know anything about the prices and stuff hoping to see his true colors then he asked me what lens i had and i started naming all the expensive lenses that belong to my dad-17-40L f4, 24-105L f4, 100-400L f4-5.6, 70-200L f4, 135 f2.
your ego takes over and you want to get back to him and play him out.

He then became serious and he told me that if i buy i must go back to him cos he gave me a "student" price! Overall i'm very dissatisfied with this kind of service, even though i'm a secondary student, i think shopkeepers should respect me when i walk into the shop and treat ALL equally!
Sales are humans so obviously they want to spend their time more productively and they WILL choose customers that has the highest potential of buying from them given the limited time constraint. That's why the guy's attitude change from not letting you try to insisting you should go back to him because along the way, he realized that you are not a 'student' just want to play with his lenses to a potential customer. I am not saying sales should treat different people differently but in reality this is happening everywhere and every day.

I WILL NOT EVER GO BACK TO THIS SHOP AS I DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE EVEN LEAVING MY BAG INSIDE THE SHOP. THIS IS SOMETHING I THINK SHOULD THE MOST BASIC OF EVERY SHOP THAT YOU'LL BE ABLE TO LEAVE YOUR STUFF IN THE SHOP FEELING AT EASE THAT THE PERSON ATTENDING TO YOU WOULD HELP KEEP AN EYE RATHER THAN ANOTHER BURDEN TO WORRY ABOUT.
p.s i was NOT over paranoid! i'm normally very chill with such things

I want to hear from you. please share your experiences with this shop. thanks!
You have your choice of where to spend your money. I would suggest you look for shops that will not look down on you base on your age or look. Build a personal relationship with one or two shops that you feel comfortable. Always go back to the same person so your experience will not vary that much. As you have said, you don't mind paying a bit more if the service is good.

I didn't see anything that TS had said will be ground for a defamation case. TS is telling his story and there was no words/sentences that was inappropriate IMO.

so surprise that you people still don't get it.
you guys engerlish so powerfool, study until go to the engerland still don't know what TS want.

it is not about the camera workshop, it is not about Nelson the shopkeeper,
and of course not about the Tokina lens 10-17mm lens

now I know what is a 5DM2, must say the 5DM2 is a awesome camera, cause I never hear anyone will want to rental a studio just to test camera before, until today......

Where to rent studios?

Next time, when I go to camera workshop, I will score Nelson, tell him must show respect to people using a 5DM2.

CS tan made a great analysis. I'm also a student, and when i try on lenses the shop keepers are a bit worried bout my handleing. Guess it's just your mindset TS.

Haha... OK lah Ok lah..
Don't forget, we have all been 16 year old students before.
What's more, we have all been 25 year old active and lively young men full of ourselves.
Even worse, we have all been 40 year old men of means to whom which no one can insult.
...
So it's just life. Every step of the way, we're bound to have different perspectives, different reactions, different solutions to the same trauma life dishes out to us.

Forgive me but i cant seem to find wat's wrong here?

Tot i saw fm e thread title like a major crime being committed by the shop.
