Do i really need a 16-85mm VR?

thanks everyone! i will probably go view the lens from a few prospective sellers and decide how. thanks for all the comments and useful comparisons!

Is 16-85 VR really that good? Pardon me as this is the 1st time I heard of this lens.
I already have 17-55 and 18-200 VR. Worth getting this 16-85?

Interesting. So there are people selling this lens (but just not advertising)... so I far I only found a few WTB in the BnS section.

from what i've read, 17-55 is better that 16-85. since you already have the 17-55 i don't think you would want to downgrade right? :)

When I was about to buy the D300 and to jump ship from the Olympus E-3, I looked carefully at all the lenses Nikon had to offer. In my opinion the 16-85 is the best DX lens in that zoom range. I know many people regard the 17-55 to be the best but I am not one of them. In my opinion the 17-55 is just too old and is in a serious need for upgrade. It is also too heavy and too expensive. Yes, it might be better in situations when you need the f/2.8 but for those situations I have the 50/1.4 and the 105/2.8VRII.

For the price of the 17-55 I'd get the 16-85 and the 35/1.8 DX (or the 35/2 FX) and the 50/1.4G, or the 50/1.8D and still have some small change over and possibly even a lighter bag. If I already had the 17-55 I don't think I'd get the 16-85, I'd wait for the VR version of the 17-55. Anyway, the comparison I made was between the 16-85 and the 18-55, not the 17-55/2.8.

The 18-200 has never been on my wish list. It is also most probably never going to end up in my bag since I regard all superzooms too poor in quality. They are practical in some situations but I prefer other solutions than super zooms.

I considered 18-200 but the corners were too bad for me :)

If you already have 17-55, you don't need the 16-85 anymore. Besides you also own a 18-200, so you are very much covered from 16-85mm range.

I own both 17-55 and 16-85. I need both.

it has good range of focal length, VR very useful for low shutter speed like 1/15. For walkabout (16-85) and landscape (16mm) it should serve u very well.

vignetting and distortion is non-issue as they can be fixed so easily. Just get it.

TS has feedback?

i'm keen with this lens too. :)

you already have 17-55. why bother look at 16-85??

sure you need it power of AFS 16-85mm VR.

start from 16mm wide = 24mm FX and 120mm Tele distance..

can i said the lens is good for using in oversea and local walkabout from woodland to punggol,
just carry 1 lens good enough to cover all the length..

I agree, 16-85mm is a very good range. I don't usually need high zooms for walk around, prefer to use my 50mm prime!
