get gf1 or pen or one of the micro4/3 camera with a basic pancake lens. That should be small, light, stylish, with all the potential of a proper dslr.

bro it's against my conscience to advise on a change of camera body. The 500D was a recent purchase. Might as well learn to use it well.

Besides, I'm biased against M4/3 EVILs. I find the ergonomics pretty darn poor.

anyway these camera nicely fill in the gulf between a dslr and the high end pns.
Ergonomics wise, she has to go down to the shop to get a actual hands on experience for a conclusion on that.

My gawd... the viewfinder is SO small... D3100 kicks its ass... macam like looking through a pinhole camera.
I don't care got how many degrees the screen can flip or whatever.... Cannot see, how to shoot?
