Very difficult to answer your question, coz "we" means whom? If me, then I will say that 70-200 is not really necessary. But I can understand why kriegs would want it.

Kriegs also not professional mah. It all depends on the type of photos you intend to take.
Like I said, so far I haven't found a "need" for a fast telephoto zoom, but knowing what kriegs is intending to use his lens for, I would say it'd be a worthwhile purchase for him.

Lets just say that it is also partially because of my kid that I've decided to take up a DSLR... You can also say that I'm about 5 years late.... but better late than never... To top it up, I've many plans / uses for the 70-200... and hope to execute all of them... (erm...of course pouring hot coffee into it isn't one of them...)

AF 80-200 f/2.8 was still available at Cathay Marina though... about 16XX... But no VR II and AF-S lah... I know there are some times I can't even use a monopod...
