I understand ;-) People who like to tinker, like to tinker with many things. I am very happy because I just modded a European army backpack myself today to make it 'urban'-friendly.

Your work reminds me of Mythbusters. :D

tis is so interesting, maybe u can sell the idea to MINOLTA for 5D grip?
You are very creative.

I guess the proverb "necessity is the mother of invention" is true.

Saw in another forum that someone overseas had modified the vertical grip for an A2 (which also uses the NP400 battery) for use with the 5D. There's someone selling one now, anyone with the talent here to do the same?

I saw that one, but if im not wrong ,he still needed the remote cable to connect to shutter release. And im not sure if the 2 battery compoartments are ususable either...

Can't find the thread, but I thought that the battery compartmnents are usable, but you are right, still needed the remote cable to connect to shutter release.

captnj read your post on how make a vertical grip using a Canon BP200. You don't actually have to buy the cable release. You could have used the canon's BP200 vertical shutter button. I followed jsbn wiring on the cable release and below is end reult.

Now you can use the canon's vertical grip shutter button. The switch for the switching on or off the vertical shutter button is not in use.

If I have time I'll modify the grip so I can draw power from it using batteries.

excellent work guys!! anyone making some for sale? some of us not so technically inclined and severly time challanged

smtan, can you show a bit more detail how u mod the remote on bp200 to fix onto your 5d? looks good :o

The battery pack cost SGD55 from Cathay Photo. Cut away the battery insert with a pen knife. Next remove the covering near the shutter button. You will see 3 wires Blue, black and yellow. Blue & Black short at pre focus and Blue black and yellow short when shutter button is depress fully. Remove the exisiting cables and solder in new wires. You can use a CD rom audio cable for it. You need to cut it as you need only 3 pins. Next you need a hole behind for the wire to go through. Please follow jsbn's wiring below:

I was thinking of soldering 2 wires from the electrical terminals and add a plug to connect to the camera. Viola power from the grip also.

looks like the bp200 doesn't require any cutting of the grip (except the battery insert of course) so no gaffering or patching required? the slight protrusion on the side also probably protects the cable better?

Just get a BP200 yesterday... i am too tired waiting for a cheap BP400...
Now can get a BP200 at more than half price of the BP400...
too bad though...

smtan i think you cannot draw power from battery with minor mod.
Battery only 4.. max only 6v (likely to be less..) you need 7.4v...

the BP400 is more ideal basically...

anyway now making it...
i'll try to make a use of the battery space inside for other thing.

and one more is... you can open and disasemble everything without spoiling too many things... very easy.. screws only.
You can take out the dummy battery.. no need to cut it.

come come... join the BP200 users... he..he..

Muko if look at the dc outlet behind the camera it states 6VDC. So it is possible to get power from the battery pack.

but 1 AA size rechargeable battery are range between 1.1~1.25V most of the time, so 4 AA batteries (BP-200) are around 4.4-5V, which will not be sufficent to power up the DSLR (minimum 6V). The actual 7D grip have 6 x AA batteries slot, so it is around 6.6-7.5V, which is about right.

So if want to make use of the Battery slot, BP-400 with 6 AA batteries slot is a better buy. But can it fix on 5D?

Wow, in no time, you guys will be metering-off the BP200! :D

is there a way to cut out the 4xAAA slots to fit a spare km5d/ eastgear battery in there?

that is what i will try ...

anyway.. the bp200 looks nicer than the bp400...
400 is too fat...

Went to cathay photo during lunch, BP-200 is out of stock.
KM BP-400 was quoted at about 200 from a shop(can't remember the name) in FuNan

bp-400 is a bit short for the base of the 5D is sit nicely.

Anyone know if any shop selling the bp-200?

so looks like the Canon BP200 grip is the one to go with eh? Muko -- any indication on price you paid for one and where did you get it?
