Hi All,

If I am not wrong, Sony camera uses IR light to illuminate the object in the night mode.
Anybody knows what type of IR lights is this? Where can I get this light?
I have checked few shops in simlim but, they asked me back with the same questions: IR transmitter or receiver? :dunno:

Thank you.

Sony ready made IR lights are available. They work for IR photography but not powerful enough for distant shots.

Check model with Dennis, he has one.

Thanks for the prompt reply teerex.

I want to DIY the IR lights so that it would be powerfull enough for distance shot.
So, it would look like a flash, but naked eyes cant see it... :)

most IR lamps are heat lamps and it is has visible red light, if is powerfull enough for distant shot, it will cook you first.

your best bet is to buy a polyester #87 filter tape over your flash unit, it has be done before and it works, do a search in the net.

Yeh, Sony IR light cannot work properly and also the beam is very narrow.
Best thing to do is to use a external flash like SB600 or 800 and put a IR filter over it.

Thanks catchlights... I would search it later.

Denis, may i know model of your sony IR light?
If we use IR filter in the flash, that means at least we need 2 IR filters? (one for flash + one for the lens).

Actually I forgot which model it is, will go back and check it out.
BTW you don't need to use a real IR filter to cover the flash, used film also can.
But than hehe maybe I may consider a real filter since have spare liow. ;p

Better use a glass filter. With that kind of light blasting (needed to go through dark filter), even a gel filter would not survive long, least to say film...

Years ago, I converted a Vivitar for UV/IR, works well enough and a good replacement for a SB-140.

Yeh regit is right, if you put too close to the light it may just melt away.
Actually I am considering to just mod the diffuser that comes with the SB800 since I have a spare.

I hope you're not planning to try this with an unconverted camera :bsmilie:

Anyway, I made an IR filter that I used to cover my SB-800. When combined with a converted D70, I was able to take "lighted" photos of a HDB flat next to mine and when used in dark places, I was able to photograph people without them realising they had been photographed. :)

The flash-filter is now with someone else.

Cheers,
Matt

Hey Matt,

I guess we are really interested how it is that going to look like. Very interesting.
