[ Discuss ] EP5 vs GX7. Or EM5?

drop by ! then u can try the cameras and get poisoned haha.

ya, think that'd be the main issue for me as EPL5 doesn't have the 2x2 control system but otherwise its still a really good camera.

Just one more question...may I know where can I get cheap cheap MCG-2 grip for my epl5??? Thanks

best bet to get it fastest is Olympus service centre but I doubt they still have it as EPL5 is an obsolete model, else Amazon is pretty cheap, but the shipping may not be unless u are buying quite a few stuff for black friday/cyber monday

I check amazon cost only $18...but plus shipping octal is $90plus....

Haha, oh my god.
Go to Oly Ctr and ask. They could even find a BNIB VF1 in its original box for me. Just be patient and they will dig it out for u.

Was too busy for the kopi session ...... anyway am sure there are tons of both the GX7 and EP5 there ..... :)

Any comments with regards the inbuilt flash? I never got any decent pics out of the GX1 unless it was very dark. Even with the i-Diot mode. Flash with the EP5, esp with fill-in is back to be a breeze. Only comments is the flimsiness of the EP5 flash and the inability to do "bounce" anymore. Anyone has a solution to prevent the accidental popping up of the flash?

So far did not really encounter flash accidentally pop up problem.

The flash also pops up sometimes for me.

No la, only 1 GX7 but a few ( 3 or 4 ) EP5s. :)

I do get the flash accidentally being released from time to time. Think quite a few of us do too.

Just ****** and press it back and move on :) minor irritant to pay for all the goodness the EP5 can bring. Better than not having a built in flash right ?

And yup , I seldom use flash but so far at the times when I needed it, 'fill-in' alone works great for me with little need to tweak any much settings.

Just back from a trip ..... and yes, by default, the EP5 tends to overexpose.

I used a "My Set" setting with -1/3EV to compare with the default setting on "A" mode at "Matrix" metering and "Point". The -1/3EV tends to be better exposed.

Anyway there is an update at V1.2 for the EP5 (mine was V1.0) so maybe after updating these may not apply

alrightie .....been a month since I started using the EP5. Bear in mind these jottings are purely for OOC jpegs.

Just a note on exposure. When the exposure is correct, the colours and contrast are fabulous, especially on "Natural". The margin for error is probably 1/2 EV within ISO200-400. And 1/3EV up to ISO800. Beyond that proper exposure matters more and really make a perceptible difference. Out of these ranges, the highlights especially loses "contrast" very fast and the AWB shifts noticeably.

After not so much of experimenting but just shooting and looking at pictures (so this is NOT a scientific comment), I am now settling for -1/3EV by default on ESP and spot metering on Aperture priority on default "Natural" colour, up to ISO3200. And I use this for most daylight shooting conditions in good lighting. I find that the EP5's default metering at +/- 0EV tends to overexpose especially for high contrast scenes in brighting.

This is the first time I am doing this for Oly's cameras since my first 43 body. I used to tend to accept the default metering before this.

With the proper exposure, the EP5's OOC output is incredibly rich and nicely "textured". Colours are rich but not exaggerated. The biggest improvement I see is in the reds. For the EP3 and below, the reds tends to "break" first. When pushed (especially with higher ISOs), the reds starts to smear. In low lighting condition but lower ISO (<800), the reds are well preserved. In the EP3, the reds tends towards brownish in low lighting.

Contrast is also improved, and I guess this is also reflected in the wider dynamic range. Details in shadows are better preserved and obviously contrast is maintained in poor light.

I am still messing around in other than "natural" lighting conditions in high ISO (>1600) conditions. Anyone care to comment on my observations :)?

Upgraded to Firmware V1.2 ..... No change on exposures. Still find the EP5's metering over exposing at default and reverted back to -1/3 and everything back fine.

Have been using "Vivid" especially for some low contrast days. On "Vivid", the reds are fairly horrendous - need to dial this down, too.
