[ Discuss ] EP5 vs GX7. Or EM5?

Haha, prices confirm will drop with time with newer and newer models.

Sure the street shops prices for EP5 should be already cheaper now.

No end de la, just buy when one is comfortable with the price. For example Q10 RRP is $910 with 1 lens. Shops now selling same thing at $480 since Q7 coming very soon.

I hope the price goes down to body+VF4 =1100 then i hoot..heheh hope by year end? dreaming...

I got my EP5 kit from HN Funan at $1,598. Market value for 17/1.8 (i was flooded with offers) and VF4 (not so flooded) is minimum $750 so body only is effectively $848.

See Senser , your hopes became reality already. ;)

1598 - 550 for 17/1.8 after selling = 1098 for body + VF4. Still got 2 dollar change from your 1100 target.

haha...i got GX1...keen to hoot GX7 or EP5...the GX1 OOC pics a bit washed out and less punchy and popping compared to oly EP3 of 2yrs ago and EM5 of 1 yr ago..so not sure if GX7 OOC shots are comparable to EP5(in Blunty's Youtube vids the EP5 shots and videos are nice)...i held one EP5 in hand...disappointed with almost no grip and rather heavy...I held GX7 today feels good but am tempted by oly colors and oly5axis stab...but GX7 seem to have 4seconds lag when transition from LCD to eye sensor activated EVF view ...waiting for head to head still shot comparison Steve Huff style before i decide..the EP5 price drop is ...tempting...but GX7 with 20mm is only 1400..decisions decisions...

haha, a lot of thought there bro.

I swopped the EM5 for EP5, was considering GX7 then too before it was released. Firstly, both are great cameras.

Both cameras are worth every penny spent coming to their price points now. EP5 after selling the the 17/1.8 means the camera and VF4 will prob just cost u <$1100. GX7 prices are even lower for body alone, ~$1000.

I tried both cameras; i stuck with my EP5. U'r right, the 5 axis vs 2 axis does make a difference. The other reason being the controls and button layout for the Oly just works for me. I had difficulty adjusting myself to using the GX7 EVF & controls. But i confess to being a Oly fanboy; the boss of my fav shop introduces me as Oly loyalist to his friends.

Colors wise, i'd say it doesn't really matter. Unless u strictly go for OOC JPEG w/o little post processing; then yes, Oly's colors are nicer :)

The lack of a grip on EP5 does irritate me at times too. Getting a Gariz half case helped a lot. Not as if u plan to use the camera with a 12-60 FT lens right?

Go try both cameras at the shop physically, it helps a lot. Don't kan-cheong buy then regret have to resell and buy. Prices wise no diff liao, more is getting the camera u will wana shoot more on

The GX1 is ......inconsistent. Occasionally the OOC is incredible, yet at times ....you are spot on in your description! These days I am too lazy to do any PP. Anyone knows any decent website making direct comparisons of IQ between the EP5 and GX7?

BTW from the Yodobashi website, the EP5 kit is JPY122,800 and the GX7 is 109,800 so another factor for consideration would be the bundled 17/1.8 vs 20/1.7 .....from all accounts I believe the IQ of the 17/1.8 is superior.

If u r referring to OOC JPEGs, alone, can share a detailed comparison between the GX7 and EM5 (which generally EP5 has improved more on) at http://www.ephotozine.com/article/panasonic-lumix-gx7-vs-olympus-om-d-e-m5-comparison-review-22646

And of course, I'll be looking at other things like controls, usability, high ISO performance, EVF image quality etc when buying a camera body.

And ... , (I copied this word for word from the website) Just the key points. Read the full page yourself for all the sample photos etc

verdict on OOC JPEG, EM5 produces slightly sharper results, better contrast as well as slightly darker exposure compared to GX7. High ISO performance is similar for both. I will assume EP5 will either maintain or improve from EM5 for this since sensor wise, both are overall quite similar.

switching off the 'warm' effect on Oly gives extremely accurate white balance results, with better results than GX7 under tungsten light. No massive diff between both under fluorescent.

Shutter response, EM5's <0.05s vs GX7, 0.05s.
Switch on time to photo, EM5 1.0s vs GX7 1.1s vs EP5 0.9s
Cts shooting (JPEG) EM5 9fps vs GX7 5.3 fps
Faster RAW shooting on EM5
IS: EP5's > EM5's (5 axis) > GX7's (2 axis)
EVF: EP5 (VF4) > GX 7 > EM5 (VF4's lag is 0.032s)

so on and so forth.

happy reading. U can find tonnes of resource on EM5 vs EP5 if u r interested too. Just google.

I too find the 20/1.7 a little sharper and just better IQ. Played with a friend's 17/1.8 and the AF is better but i dont see a need to swap my 20 for the 17.. IMHO

I'm the one who swapped the 20 for the 17. agree 20 is slightly sharper ; reasons for swap was the big improvement in AF speed and the snap manual focus ring by distance markers that the 17 offered.

True... however i really like the pancake design.. : ) lol.. buy both..

I decided against the GX7 and went for something totally off - the sony NEX 5T. But I have a caveat.....I am only using it with the 20 f2.8. The rest of the sony E-mount range are too humongous to justify the size of the body of the camera. So its probably not suitable for someone who wants something more versatile like telephoto and macro etc etc.

I would be happy with either. But as it stands my preference would be for the 17/1.8. Or sell it :)

I've had a NEX 5N for a few years. I find it's best use with adapted lenses, especially manual focus rangefinder lenses, which are very compact. My best portrait shots have been with the Zeiss Biogon 35mm F2.0. I love my Oly 45mm F1.8 too as a portrait lens and it autofocuses instantly with the OMD and GX7, but there is just something about the Zeiss glow that it can't reproduce. I also have some full frame SLR lenses like the Pentax FA77 F1.8. The rendering of these full frame lenses seem to be better with the APS-C crop factor than M43, which doubles the focal length.
