:bsmilie: yup I did. Just came back from Cambodia.

My trip started from Phnom Penh to Kompong Thom (Baray District) and lastly to the Sihanouk Ville beaches. All 3 places gave me very differing experience of Cambodia. I must say the best experience is at Baray. Beggars and peddlers are inevitable in touristy cities like Phnom Penh & Sihanouk Ville. I make it a pt not to give money to beggars but I do pack some of my food and give it to them. In fact I have a packet of chocolate which I give out to kids on the streets. Some child beggars beg for the sake of begging especially the kids at the bank of Tonle Sap river opposite the Sisowath Quay. One minute they can be playing around and the next minute they are asking tourist for money. Giving to them will only give them the idea that such practice is accepted and does not help in the country's progression or the child's growing up.

have you been there b4? :)
did u really? haha thats nice.

Sambo The Last Elephant of Phnom Penh
Sambo, a female elephant in her late 40s is the last elephant remaining in Phnom Penh. Her caregiver is Sin Son who together with his family, took care of Sambo since she was 8 years old. Elephants were once plentiful in the rural areas of Cambodia and were used for transportation of goods and carrying of logs. Sambo was separated from Sin Son at the age of 17 when civil war broke out and Sin Son was forced to work in a labor camp by Khmer Rouge cadres. After the civil war, Sin Son was amazed to find out that Sambo was still alive. Sambo was living hundreds of miles away in Cardamom Mountains, west of Phnom Penh. Sin Son pedalled on his bicycle for 3 days to re-unite with Sambo. Today, Sin Son hired a helper to take care of Sambo. Sambo will be at Wat Phnom daily from 7am till around 4pm. Sambo will then head home by walking on the streets in Phnom Penh! So, don't be shock to see an elephant on the street in the evening. Rather than going for the boat ride, try walking home with Sambo. Its fun... but the new helper is rather hostile and not that friendly so try not to be to invasive.

Life @ Train Station

This area is designated for development by the government and families living here are given 2 options. One is to take a lump sum of money or move to be relocated. Most are skeptical about being relocated because they are afraid that the showroom they saw (which is nice, spacious and tempting) might not be what they will get when they signed the contract.

A boy with his ox cart (Baray District, Kompong Thom)

In a country where 50% of its population below 16 years, kids have to work or help out in the fields. Its amazing how this 9 year old boy can control the ox cart. He also helps out by bringing the herd (20 odd ox and a dog) to the grassland so that they can feed on grass.
