Hi all im pretty new to photography and to my A1. I tried to take some shots of a basketball game today. I know that u need fast shutter speed for action shots. So i turned to 1/4000-1/16000 settings... but i cant take a photo!! i half depress the trigger and the image shows on the LCD for a split second... then i fully depress and it shoots but all black... nothing... if i do not depress the trigger, its all black in the lcd...? any help? i read the manual... cant seem to find it.
thanks!

You are on manual mode ? Even though you need fast shutter speed for action shots but you still need enough light at your camera largest aperture settings (smallest f stops) in order to get a properly exposed picture. Your photos are properly too much underexposed and that is why it is all dark..

ok that makes sense... what do i do to get more light in?

Why do you need to shoot at 1/4000 - 1/16000? Its not quite achievable with ISO100 - ISO200 range unless under strong sunlight. Increase the ISO value to boost the shutter, but I doubt you like the result as it will be very noisy.

ok thanks for telling me. Then what shutter speed should i use for a basketball game? Or for moving people in general?

thanks!

IMO, 1/500 and upwards will be good enough to freeze people action.

Do take a look at others work for better idea for specific application. For example, this jump shot was taken at 1/1000.

Hiee....Jon....

Your shutter speed is just to.....1/500-1/1000 would be just nice....No need to have that higher speed......Those higher speeds are suitable for bright sun at the back kinda da shots....

May be you can try F8 1/640 ISO100. I used it to shoot my friend playing basketball before in noon with my A1 not long ago, under very strong sun light.

The image appear quite alright, details of sky still can be seen. But you may wish to use fill-in flash to light up the object~^^

Beside changing shutter speed, you can try to change the F value to get the correct exposal too.

1/5000 is too fast already, normally you wont use it unless you wanna shoot something extremely fast with powerful flash / studio light.

my A1 is two months old already, haha... ;)

Try under strong sunlight. about 1/500, ISO 200 F4+ Should be good enough. Took pictures at some games. not bad.
