Off topic, can anyone tell me the procedure and estimated cost to get a scuba diving qualification certificate thingy? I almost ended up paying S$500 for a course...whoa.

Wait a min, you no dive cert yet? Then I advice you get your cert first. If new diver, then train on your buoyancy and diving skills before giving underwater photography a try.

How can you take a photograph when you're already having problem just trying to stay neutral bouyance. Hard to aim those cameras when you're floating all over the place.

umm i swim and can dive with a snorkel. I even went down and got myself a sea cucumber lol At least i don't need a life jacket. Does that count for anything? lol

Swimming with snorkel = snorkeling
Diving with snorkel only = Free Diving
Dive with tanks = Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus diving, SCUBA Diving

Of cos different lah. Free dive no matter how good, most I give you 10-15 mins underwater. Scuba can stay underwaters at least 30mins.

wahhh free dives usually 6min leh.. my dive comp will lock me out if i free dive for more then 6min.. anyway i can only hold my breath 2min max :P

er diving with snorkel is skin diving.. free diving no have snorkel one :)

snorkeling, skin diving is totally different from scuba... scuba you can reach places and stay there that the other 2 is unable to accomplish, then there's the bouyancy control which you have to take note.. to avoid crushing the delicate system.

i advise you to take up your open water and advance before going into uw photograhy.. taking advance you can do nite dive.. which you can see much more things then the day dive

using a 3mp p&s digi cam may not neccessary give you greenish and blueish picture.. using a 8mp DSLR with strobe may not neccessary give you a very colourful picture..

first you must understand that in water, which is a heavier medium then air, actually will restrict the colors in the light, thus creating the greenish and bluish picture.

so rule no 1. you want good picture.. get close to the subject. a strobe is a PLUS not a MUST.

i've seen ppl using p&s camera with very good pictures..
although a DSLR will actually give you more option in the type of picture you want to compose.

one set back about DSLR.. you can only choose one lens per dive..
pro-consumer and p&s camera have the landscape, marco features built in more choices.

now days underwater housing comes with add ons like wide angle lens, marco lens, even filters for those without a strobe.. but i've yet to really use my filters (PS 8.0 can add so no need buy) :P

one cent, one value lor..

hey thanks for so much information! I came here to learn photography and ended up learning so much more hehe.

i was actually hoping to take photos during snorkelling. You know, dive down-focus-snap-rush up. haha. I just wanna take good photos of sea-turtles.(saw them in every trip)

If going lower than what u normally can during snorkelling is prettier and nicer, i wouldn't mind spending money for a certificate. hehe :sweatsm:

Thank you all for the information!

well just sharing what i've learnt from the others here :)
btw.. taking photo downwards in water will have a very flat feel..
try taking it from the side or bottom up instead.. effect will be better

uw photography and land is different lor cos there's water. so light bends differently in water.

normally to get a really good photo.. the photographer may have to spend like 15min to an hour or more at the same spot.. some even spend days there comin up for breaks and change of tanks only. cos you cannot zoom in to your subject in water. the picture will never be nice.

fourtheyeblind, can u provide details of the casing u found for eos 3??? please? thanks
