For 500+ you can get an IXUS 200 or something like that - a decent compact.
For 600+ you can get a Sony A230 kit - a decent DSLR.

You have been asking recommendation without giving people any hints what is your preference with only a budget to go by.

The only other criteria is to recommend a "good" camera. That's why I ask you to close they eyes and just pick one between G11 and S90 because both are capable cameras and for normal use, either one of them can do the job.
