I've been looking at 50mm 1.8 AFD prices in BnS and they tend to hover between 100-200 for the past month or so... however, this afternoon I went to peninsular plaza, the shop on the ground level facing the street (the one with the many fujifilm banners)... the man said he was selling 50mm 1.8 for 150 first hand...

Why is there such a discrepancy in price? Has anyone dealt with this shop before and can you give me advice?

Thank you!

150 for 50 mm is a good deal..

i guess because of the influx of japanese yen these lens costs a bit higher than it used to be..

most probably is a gray set.

mm i think so too, im hoping its not a 2nd hand one repackaged... but he said he had ready stock; why do people sell 2nd hand more than new o.0

mm that's what i was thinking, though he did immediately try to make me buy a vitacon macro/wideangle converter for an absurd price, which i obviously turned down... wouldn't that make the lenses more expensive?

Why dun u buy from him what a waste $150 is a steal. You should try then u know why so cheap...

I know which shop you are referring too, try to avoid that shop. Most likely they will sell you the overpriced lousy UV filter. If you say you don't want to buy the filter, then they will tell you there is no more stock for the lens. Perhaps you can check the "Consumer Corner" to find out more about this blacklisted shop.

if its brand new and local set, then its really a good deal. but i doubt it is. sometimes they quote u b4 GST also. just be careful.

people in B&S have their rights to sell at whatever price they want to, even if its higher than the market price brand new; at least that is what i believe. ultimately its up to the potential buyer to decide if they want to buy it from him/her. if u think the price for the 2nd hand one is too high, you can always wait for one which fits your expectations, or just buy a brand new piece.

If it is too good to be true, it probably is.

Anyway, tell the uncle you want the lens. then when he bring it out, you start to check the lens. Then take out your hp out and k k check for sms and say you changed your mind, coz a friend sms you and tell you that he will give you a 52mm filter free. So you don't need the bloody filter. Since the lens is already on the counter in front of you, he cannot say he has no stock right? Just remember not to pay before checking the item.

Even if the uncle kick up a fuss and not sell you the lens in the end, you at least made him work. Den no offense just work out lor. It is a gamble. Either you get the lens at 150 or not. Even with GST added it is 160. That is a good $30 cheaper than market price. Make sure you check the lens inside out though, also check the serial number against the warranty card.

Anyway, it is up to you. And always be prepared to walk out and not buy with no anger. That is the best attitude to buying at a good price and long health. No use getting angry over sellers like that. If you play your game right, you may walk out the winner instead.

More reliable to check the Price Guide for reference than the B&S section.

Some seller could have bought theirs' at higher prices when new, so their used price may be almost same as new as they're probably not aware.

Eg. New D700 is less than $3.4K now but used to be $4K, so some are advertising for less than 5% lower than a new set.

Exactly why those D700's are not selling fast as people who really want them are buying them new instead.

For TS's reference, the lens was selling for only $160 brand new, inclusive of GST with ready stock and almost same prices across all the reputable shops back in May 2008 when I bought it. It was only late last year when prices jumped a notch up, so if you want a good deal, find a lens that wasn't purchased after the prices rised so that you could possibly negotiate for yourself a better deal with a reasonable seller.

By the way, that shop that (I think) you are referring to is kind of notorious. Do a search with the shop's name and you can find the thread here on ClubSnap.

This shop is very "famous", I googled the shop name and found that quite a number of forums discussing about this shop.
Be careful when want to buy anything from this shop. Better, do not buy from this shop.

AF-S 35mm f1.8 too... people are actually selling higher in B&S than in shops...
I got mine brand new from shop for like $20 cheaper than B&S...

Please post price related questions in the consumer's corner and not in the equipment forum. Thread moved.
