Hi there! Anyone can help me point out the difference between these two rangefinders? Was looking around and saw the IIIF. What was shocking was the price difference with the Leica M Rangefiners, eg M4-P, M6 etc. I tried to google but to no avail.. Anyone?

Different lens mount, you can use IIIF lens on M but not the other way round

Will there be a difference in the image quality between the Leica M and the IIIF?

My answer is "Yes". IQ sharpness is better from the M series due to the fact that the M series can take all M mount lenses up to and including the latest APO APSH lenses.

Since M series can mount both LTM (Leica Thread Mount with adaptor) and M mount lenses, they can achieve images of old soft focus classic touch or the ultra sharp APSH.

Have you seen this? Do you think it could produce sharp image? :)

BTW, there are many LTM lenses capable of producing sharp pix (Jupiter-3 and VC lenses included), and after certain point, you would learn that sharpness is not everything.

Wow! Screw mount Cron35Asph! Made in limited number for the Japanese market.:thumbsup:

second YOL925, sharpness is not everything and there are loads of great lens for LTM too

the main differences apart from the lens are :

VF :
the VF in IIIf is tiny as opposed to those on Ms.

RF :
the RF in IIIf is uncoupled, meaning you have to look at the RF window to focus and then the VF to compose (or vice versa) whereas in the M, the RF is built into the VF, so you compose and focus at the same time.

Framelines :
IIIf VF covers only 50mm, there are no framlines for you if you are shooting other focal length (only the IIIg has limited framelines). With the Ms, you have more choices for framelines (although the M3 has limited too but better than the IIIg)

Winder :
In the IIIf u turn the winder which could be a bit slow as compared to Ms, which winds like any modern manual film camera.

Shutter Speed :
To change the shutter speed in IIIf, first you MUST wind the camera first, then pull up the knob and adjust to your desired speed and should the speed desired is lower than 1/25 speed, then you have to select the shutter speed at the main knob at 1/25 then change to your choice at the secondary shutter speed knob at the front. In any Ms, it's just like what we all are used to (for this my vote going for the M5)

those above are the difference in using between IIIf and most Ms.

the Ms are far more user friendly camera. If you are beginners to RF, it's better to start with Ms first or else you might hate RF ;p using a IIIf now is like an aquired taste, it's like eating petai! :bsmilie:

although the IIIf is never a use friendly camera, some of my frens were even saying that the camera is just good for display, i find it otherwise. with all the hassle, it really works me out. that why i love my dearly IIIf a lot!

ok... since someone brought up LTM lens...

This one taken by Voigtlander 50/f2.5 LTM. One of the most understated lens in the CV lens line up.

At f2.5, many people say no "bokeh".... but I think it gives one of the best sharpness plus out of focus area I've seen...

Fit it into any of the screw mount bodies should create the same wonder too. :)

Chiif, correct me if I'm wrong- this is one of 2 VC lenses that is made of solid Brass. Nice OOF.:thumbsup:

Thanks!

You are correct!

Now they are all out of production and have gained the status of collectable lenses...

Luckily the 28/f3.5 is still available on Nikon S mount... :)

Wow, this is a "special version" APSH LTM lens. another collector item.

Fully agreed with you, sharpness is NOT everything in photography. Artistic value is very subjective. A out of focus or soft focus and blur image may be very appealing and sentimental as compare to a too "artificially sharp" APSH lens. Some may like CV lens, some prefer the Leica pre-APSH, others prefer the APSH, it is all different taste.

Please read my statement carefully, for a M series camera, It CAN MOUNT BOTH THE LTM AND M MOUNT LENSES. So you will have ALL choices (CV LTM, Leica LTM, Canon LTM, jupitar russian lens, all mount lens, even pin hole camera cap), so you would be able to achieve whatever effect you want! :)

Like your classic collection!

Cheers, bro

Thanks for the information everyone! Would take some time to read on it and digest it haha :sweatsm:
