Difference between the Kit lens and 17-40mm f4 L ?

Well, im quite new here but this might help..

The one taken with EF-S 18-55 (Kit)

And, d one taken with 17-40 f/4L

Both are original pictures taken with Canon EOS 400D.

F/4L is proved to produce better and sharper images. (High IQ and contrast)
It also has a better and faster focus..
In addition, it has a nice weather sealed body. And the red stripe at the end of the lens somehow gives u a professional look.. (stylo)

I think, having a Canon "L" lens does really worth the penny..

Both look pretty sharp to me... both at f4?

a quick look at the EXIF says its 1/60 F5 for both, 39mm on the 18-55 and 40mm on the 17-40..

the 17-40 is significantly sharper to me :think: compare the url text on the bottom right of both of the images..

correct me if i'm wrong but the the shot taken with kit lens was focused at the converse plastic bag near the wall that's why the bike is a bit soft/oof.

looking at the 17-40 shot with the bike sharper, you'll notice the converse plastic bag blurry.

i'm no pro but at that resolution i think can't see if it's taken by kit or L lens

Focus error, (may) not (be) lens fault. :thumbsd: You can actually see the difference in the distance of the focus plane between both photos.

haha , thats what i though also . I'm also no pro , thats why i dare not to ask ..... but i think if you dont tell me which lens you use , i would think its the same man ..... After looking at the 2 photos , i feel that the focus is different from both thats why the one taken with the L lens look sharper ... not really sure but hope someone can give some comments too .

Well, both pictures were taken with autofocus.. That reflects on the focusing system of each lenses i guess..

Anywae, how about this one..

There r noticable differences in terms of contrast and also sharpness (take a look at d texture on d wall on right hand side of the picture).

And btw, these pictures were taken with a crop body (400d), u can notice a bigger difference in an FF body (try 5d)...

I can tell... v little diff though...

quite bad distortion there even with a 1.6x crop.... check out the football in the L shot....

Thanks for following up with test shots. Really good effort :thumbsup: To the trained peeper, can see the difference in sharpness. Colour and contrast difference is very obvious though.

Unfortunately, the 18-55mm kit lens is EF-S mount.. won't fit on the 5D.

Aiyah..this comparison is different. Shutter speed diff - 1/15 V 1/25. Like that not so accurate test.

Imanuel, thank you very much for your hard work.

However, some things to take note in general

AF system, while co-related to the lenses' maximum aperture, is also dependant on technique. What I would do in a lens test is choose a focus point that's over (preferably) the nearest subject, and make sure focus is achieved. Exposure between both shots should be identical. Preferably, shutter speeds and aperture sizes should be identical, as well as ISO speeds.

Use common focal lengths if you're gona pit the lenses head to head. No point testing one at 55mm and one at 40mm because it's the longest that lens has. Test both at 24mm and 35mm may be a good idea as both have these focal length markings.

Usually pro and those who look at details can tell the difference. A quick look at it, can't really tell much of a difference. If you are just looking at pic quality then the difference is really not much at F/5. If one continues to test at F/3.5 or F/4 then..... also at 18mm and etc... then you'll see more differences.

You want to take wedding photos for your bro with kit lens ( in a dimly lit restaurant banquet?) I would say it will be quite frustrating.
