waht machines do they use?

Recently went on a testing spree to try out the prints at various labs/machines... my 3 images were direct from digicam with +1 stop brightness and cropped to 6R. No adjustment allowed.

Sent them to :-
> Fuji FDI lab using Frontier 350 (CA Supreme paper)
> Konica lab using QD-21 (Konica Dragon paper)
> Kodak lab using System 88 (Kodak Royal paper)
> Agfa lab using D-Lab2 (Agfa paper)
All 4 are reasonably well recommended in CS.

Outcome on Cat pix
Kodak - unnatural colors, too "rich" for my taste
Fuji - very near reality, fine and sharp
Konica - very near reality, fine and sharp (to my surprise)
Agfa - very very sharp, but fake colors

Outcome on Little Girl pix
Kodak - sickly skin tones
Fuji - soft and nice skin tones
Konica - soft and white skin tones
Agfa - Overly sharpened, too much artifacts

Outcome on grained, toned print (Platinum)
Kodak - :flush:
Fuji - close to what I want
Konica - very nice grain, but the tinge of yellow isn't Platinum
Agfa - greenish greenish tones

So, my very very personal opinion is to recommend FDI or Konica digital labs. The former are supposed to have pretty good quality control by Fuji. The latter, well, check out the rest of CS.....

NO, I have no intention of having a flame war from this post. I do stand by what I post. Interested parties can PM me to find out more, and maybe we can arrange for me to bring the prints to view at SEED.

Can you also try a few fuji lab to see if the operator make a difference to your print? thanks.

lastly, is conversion of icc profiles to the minilabs system necessary before sending it for printing? what if i dunno how to do it or dun do it?

Personally, no. But I do set up my home monitor to reflect as close an end result as possible. So far, I know its abt 95% close as what I got to see at 3 of the 4 labs I tried, without any need to push density.

But if you are printing at a FDI, then using the Frontier ICC could probably be better. I haven't tried though. See no need for it.

can you tell us the location which lab you have try your 6R prints at?
and what their costs?

Photofriend at Penisular offering $40 for 100 4R and a 12R enlargement. No idea if they charge for service. Some people who use them say theyare ok personally have not used them.

Has anyone of you tried developing your photos at Hotprint before? Hotprint is currently having a promotion. 4R at $0.40 and for every 50pcs developed you will get a free S8R or 2 x 6R. On top of that, above 100pcs a further 10% discount will be given which makes it $0.36/pc. Photos come with index print and non-stick album. Minimum is $5/- per transaction. ;)
