Actually they have no right to cut off ur stuffs, you can make a rukus abt it.

Also, i dont think that such artistic nudes would be a criminal offence as it doesn't really fall under pornography. in any case its a matter for the police and not their unilateral action in cutting off.

Actually tried the fast develope without print method at kodak outlets, sad to say my last try failed.

The few artistic nude negs kena cut off from the rest, so asked the female staff why so.

Then they say this material is not to be developed, even negs.
And they said that the negs were cut off and discarded.

That is the reply i got.
;(

If nude photographs are considered pornography, then bookstores like Kino, borders are guilty of selling photo books of such material. Seen lots of such art & photography related books there....

I guess if u went to a more professional developer, and not your typical shop catering to the neighbourhood for developing mostly holiday pics, it should be ok. Telling them upfront what type of negs u have, might make them more tactful in dealing with such photos.

I agree that artistic nude photography should not be equated to pornography. However, the access to such material still has to be regulated.

For developing such negatives, I would recommend disclosing the nature of content of the negative to the shop owner up front.

They are also humans with intelligence. Disclosing up front is being respectful and it gives them the choice of not accepting the business if they are some how uncomfortable with it.

Of course when you discuss the contents of the negatives with the shop owner, you got to behave professionally and speak with confidence. Otherwise you might create a negative impression and thus increase the chances of rejection.

If you are going to just process the negatives and then do your own scanning/printing at home, then just spend the 20 minutes in the shop waiting for the processing to be done, and then get the processed negatives and leave. That way you will also be sure that the shop owner is not doing anything funny like making prints from your negatives while you are not around.

The problem is that legally, the line between artistic and pornography is hard to distinguish, and open to interpretation. As is fairly evident, what might be considered obscene in SG might potentially not be considered so in a more liberal country.

And no, I don't think that shop was right to swipe the negs either. Whether into the bin or their own private collection.

I agreed that the shop had no right to cut out the negatives, unless there is something written on the agreement. You the receipt that they give that is torn off the envelope? Have anyone really read what it says. I remember them saying that the shop is only liable to replace a roll if something goes wrong but nothing about censorship. I guess they play on our fears of them going to the authorities. Or perhaps they are required to send suspicious material to the censorship board, so they rather cut it out than go through that trouble..:(

I know the uncle and auntie at my neighbourhood laundry/colour lab. If I ever take nude pictures, I'll them straight.

Hope they don't get a heart attack! :D

Agree that that you shd tell them upfront the nature of the negs. & see whether they want to accept or not.

Agree also that it was wrong of that shop to cut off your negs. without your permission.

I think the best way is still to shoot black & white & do your own processing or use digital I guess.

Why dont u post the name/location/details of the shop. They can sure do with some bad publicity for the non-professional self righteoous way they have handled the negatives. If anything you can prob sue them for negligence :P

In any case, as to whether its obscene, if the photos are similar to those artistic nudes books in the national libraries, by analogy, it will not be held as being obscene. In any case, obscene is defined by law as something which "tend to deprave and corrupt" and i hardly think that the national library board would allow something that depraves or corrupts on their shelves.

Cheers!

hmm guys, if u really interested to develop nudes (colour and b&w), can contact me... i got lobang but dunno if they still wanna do anot... must check with them...

I just checked with them, they say no problem. They will in fact develop and print on the spot so you can rest assured that the photos won't be shown to others. But to protect their business (in case), I will not disclose in public. Please PM me if you are keen.
